I need to create a whitepaper for someone that explains the GPS "store & forward" function. I would like to talk about capabilities, limitations and overall functions.

Store & Forward is not specifically a GPS feature. It's more of a feature of satellite telecom systems. Essentially, any data (usually tracking data) that involves two-way communication between you and some data collection station will be linked via some satellite. To exchange data in real-time (or near real-time), the satellite must have both you and the data collection station is sight. If the data collection center is not in sight, then the data you want to send will be stored. That stored data will be forwarded to the data collection station once the data collection station is in satellite's view.

GPS tracking data is one such data that can utilize this feature of its host system. But it is not something that is native to the GPS satellites or the system itself.

Finding the right GPS for your traveling needs is best done at a GPS store.

Where do you store your gps after you're done using it?

Are there other alternatives to viewing your gps in your car rather than the mount?

Is it ok to store your gps in your car during a hot day?

Ideally, it is best to take the complete mount and GPS PND with you when leaving your vehicle. If this is not possible, consider where you will leave a Wallet or a cell phone. I would say the safest place in your car would be in the trunk, and if you own an SUV or Truck, than the glove box would be an option but lock it.
You don't want to leave an evidence that there is a GPS mounted in your vehicle before, the windshield mount will leave a ring mark that will tip off the potential thief that there could possibly be a GPS in your vehicle.
These theft are usually a crime of opportunity, so don't make it to easy for the thief's and you should be fine.

The other good reason NOT to store your GPS inside your windshield is that the heat from the sun will dramatically shorten the life of your internal battery so you want to keep it away from the sun in a shady location if possible.

I'm looking for a compact notation to store an (x,y,z,) co-ordinate based on GPS data. How many bytes do I need?

That would depend entirely on how precise you want the coordinates to be.

That said, a double-precision floating point value is often 8 bytes; you'd need 24 bytes to store the full position that way.

There are stores in my area. Target, radio shake, walmart, Also How can I get a gps good price for my money?

Look online on tigerdirect, amazon or new egg. They are usually cheaper. Prices vary though, in some cases you might find the gps you want cheaper at the store . Figure out which one you want then compare the price at each store and online.

I'm not sure where to buy a portable gps online. I usually don't buy stuff online that much, I've read a lot about online stores that scam people by charging more money onto their credit cards. So I'm not sure whether or not to buy it online since it's not really that safe.

First, you should decide what kind of GPS you want. Decide on the product, then the store. If you read reviews at a site like cnet.com, they will link directly to the stores and show you user feedback ratings. Yahoo shopping and Froogle do the same thing.

In my experience, almost all online shopping has been legit. The one time that I was ripped off, I disputed the charge and won a reversal. It took all of ten minutes.

Things to watch when choosing an online vendor:

- Shipping cost. Some vendors pad their shipping costs and don't show you until after you put in your credit card information. Be careful.

- Shipping turnaround time. Oftentimes, vendors will ship "within 24 hours" but within 24 hours of what? Their receipt of your order? You placing the order? Do they actually ship or do they put it in a box and ship it the following day? If you're paying for expidited shipping, this is very important.

- Customer service. Do they have a phone number you can call, or is it just e-mail?

- User feedback. What kind of problems did their customers have, and how were they resolved? ** ALL ** vendors have problems at one point or another. UPS could have dropped and damaged the box. They could have mistakenly shipped the wrong item. There are all sorts of things that go wrong -- what's important is how the vendor resolved those issues. You want a company that wants your repeat business. Oftentimes, dealing with a large company (such as Best Buy or Circuit City) means you pay a premium, but you'll get to talk to someone who can resolve your issues.
