GPS Systems?
gps-tracking-dashboard-2-thumb

I want to get a GPS system for my car. I need one that shows backroads though because I know that some systems don't. I know Garmin has good systems but they really don't come out and say whether they show backroads or not. Does anyone have any suggestions? Like, what's the difference between the new Garmin 350 and 650?

The maps on GPS receivers do not discriminate against backroads. Granted, they may not show a road that is just two ruts in a field, but they will show gravel roads in rural areas. My Magellan and Garmin units have taken me on such roads a few times.

What company make the best GPS systems for a good price? And what model of it do u like the best?
gps tracking interface

I have heard Garmin makes really nice GPS systems but some say tom tom isnt bad however others say Sony is the best. Which are the best?

No handheld GPS devise is really great for a CAR!! For the money ANY.....LAPTOP NAV SOFTWARE is a better way to go!! What I mean is, for under $100.00 US you can buy software and GPS to plug into any laptop made in the last 10 years. This still is the smartest and best, by far!!

Another and better way to go other than the handhelds, laptops and PDA’s is the OEM CAR NAV!! WHY!!! It uses multi measurements!! Alpine is the best at this by far.. Moreover, has been the best in OEM and aftermarket for over ten years.

Most of Garmin's products are just toy for hikers!! None of the car or boat makers use it.

Multi measurements use in Alpine and OEM units means; it tracks your driving distances alone with the GPS satellite. It tracks, tire turns, speedometer and keeps calibration calculation to best position you if the GPS signals is lost or ever weak. Best of all is......the amount of additional info, like traffic, Zaget and other info. Plus they will talk to you!! Most OEM units are hands free. Alpine best…is only in Acura!! Acura Nav system from Alpine is the best in the world by far!! Best of all it can work with LIVE....local traffic. So it will re-route you quickly. This is without you doing anything! My wife loves it!!

Another good aftermarket unit, is the top of the line Pioneer for under $1000.00 US. Dealer cost is now under $600.00US!!

Now for a DEAL!! Get the Dual at Best Buy for under $500.00 US when on sale!! This is a great deal and far better than any hand held unit!!

Now for those portable/handheld units; TomTom get last years model....! They can often be found for half off retail price. So TomTom or Garmin is fine for basic info not driving. But buy last year’s model!! You are not getting much on the newer units!!

LAST and most important!! THE GPS WAR is OVER!!

CELL PHONES, like IPOD and TRIO is the way to go for the $$$ dollars!! Most of world's manufactures of GPS, know they have SHORT market life ahead, based on the new phones coming out!!

Navtec, the leading mapping software for all the above products.... was bought out completely by Nokia..! They are the 1# cell phone makers in the world!

So everyone is freaking out at all the above companies!!
They all will be out of the GPS/NAV market soon!! Why dose anyone need more than one GPS/NAV unit!! Moreover Cell Phones will work the best and be the most updated and offer the most features, like calling for HELP!!

In the NEW world, we will get everything on our phones!! Moreover will not ever have an GPS, Ipod or even a PDA! WHY because the newest phones and services make it, so you do not even need a home phone, internet nor cable TV connection or any Microsoft software!! IBM and AT&T new this back in the 80’s! Why do think IBM gave up on OS2? Because the future of PC and home entrainment will soon be on everyone’s cell phone!! NOT an I-POD!!

FYI

Many companies had products on the market to do all of this 20 years ago! The only difference today is, the NEW Mobile Web WAR and MP4!! Plus NOW…. AT&T, Google and Nokia plan to work to together on one format for NAV, Traffic, Communication, computing and entertainment, like games!! At the last S3 game convention everyone was mostly focused on Cell phone games future.... not Playstation nor Xbox.

The Mobile WEB format that wins in China cell phones, will soon dominate the world!! This means we all will get new phones with GPS, TV, Movies and every kind of software and communication on our Phones. Just look at what an I-Phone can new now!! This is nothing to what is coming out at CES2008

PS

Sony is the worst by far!! They were first in the market in the early 90's. But have fallen far behind everyone else.

How you would demonstrate the basics of satellites and/or gps systems?
gps vehicle tracking dashboard

I need to make a model or hands on demonstration that I could use to demonstrate the basics of satellites and gps positioning systems.

I've learned the fundamentals of the positioning system, and the system of satellites, but I'm struggling to think of an effective way to present it.

Thanks

Put out a large area shallow pan. Mark three separated spots on the bottom of the pan to indicate the location of your satellites. Ideally, each satellite spot would be located on one of the points of an isoceles triangle. Mark a fourth spot among the three satellite spots as your target spot, the place locating the position you want to fix via your simulated GPS.

Fill the pan with water so as to cover its entire area with, say, 1 inch of water. Put a device to sit on the bottom of the pan where the target spot is marked so that the device sticks out of the water.

Stick a finger in the water over the first "satellite" spot to create a ripple. The ripples represent the GPS signals from that satellite. Time the time t1 it takes for the ripple to travel from the first spot to the target. Repeat this with the other two satellite spots to get t2 and t3.

To calibrate the velocity V of a ripple, measure the distance between one of the satellite spots and the target, using a meter or yard stick. Then V = S/t; where S is the measured distance and t is the time it took the ripple to get to the target. In a real GPS V = c, the speed of light, so this step isn't necessary for a real GPS case.

Given the wave velocity is the same V for all the ripples, you can calculate the distance between the target device and each of the spots where you dipped your finger to create the ripples. Thus, you'll have s1 = Vt1, s2 = Vt2, and s3 = Vt3.

Repeat these procedures until you have, say, N = 30 calculated sets for s1, s2, and s3. Let S1 = sum(s1)/N, S2 = sum(s2)/N, and S3 = sum(s3)/N be the average distances to the target from the respective dipping points representing three satellites. This is an important step to minimize measuring errors.

Plot each of these three average distances on a piece of paper as radii around each of the corresponding three dipping points. Where the three radii intersect is the calculated position of your target device. You can sort-of prove this result by moving the target around and redoing the experiment to show your experimental results correspond with the actual position of the device on the pan.

Check your calculated "GPS" results with the actual postion as measured with a meter rod or yard stick; it'll be interesting to see how accurate your calculated "GPS" measures were. Speculate on where the errors might have come from. Might GPS have the same kinds of error?

And there you have it...that's how GPS works. By ranging off three or more satellites, you can fix a position on Earth's surface quite accurately...down to about 1 m error using the best GPS receivers. And, if you add more satellites, the ranging error becomes less because there are more radii to intersect.

How do GPS systems help to reduces fuel cost?
gps fleet tracking dashboard thumb

I recently found it on the web that firms who instal GPS systems on their fleet are on their way to reduce fuel cost in an ever rising fuel price times.
How does this work?

Quicker routes...less gas....you aren't getting lost and wasting gas to get back where you should be?

here is the article.

http://hubpages.com/hub/Making-Life-a-Li ttle-Easier-with-GPS-Systems

Yet, are you still wondering how these gps navigational systems can help you save on gas? Think about it for a moment. If they can help you to always find the shorter routes to your destinations, you will be saving on time and on fuel costs because you won't be taking the longer routes or wasting time going around in circles looking for that exact address you need.

Where can I buy damaged GPS navigation systems?
