Is there a GPS unit that you can add missing streets?
GPS Navigation Exercise - Day 5

I'm researching GPS units to go into emergency vehicles that serve very rural areas. Experience with other units, they always seem to be missing some of the small "back roads". Is there a unit out there that you can add these missing roads in own your own?

Not that I know of, but if you're doing this professionally I'd contact a salesman at Garmin, TomTom, Magellen, etc. They will know if there are "professional" models that do more than consumer models. Contact info should be on their websites.

You can (or should be able to) update the databases on your GPS on a regular basis along with the firmware though an internet connected computer. Usually though USB.

What is the cheapest gps unit that i can use for geocaching?
Guardian Olubi with GPS

i dont want to spend over $100 on a gps unit and i've seen some at wal-mart within my price range will those work for geocaching?

For under $100, it'll be really basic but it will be enough for geocaching. You're probably looking at the Garmin eTrex or eTrex H. They allow you to enter coordinates and then use the compass page to guide you to the coordinates. That's pretty much all you need from a GPS receiver to go geocaching. At some point you might want to buy the data cable so you can send caches from your computer to the GPS receiver instead of manually entering the coordinates.

What is the best GPS unit for use in Canada?
sportage on car

I'm not looking for fancy stuff like bluetooth or mp3 etc. I just want the most functional route planning GPS with the best maps of Canada. I would like it to be Mac compatible, offer re-routing and multiple destination planning, be able to save routes, spoken street names, and no extra stuff to buy (ie: traffic unit). Any advice would be welcome - thanks!

I have a Garmin nuvi 200 (I think it's one of the most basic models from Garmin). You can use maps from anywhere in the world - I'm not sure if you download them or what.

This model is really user friendly. It tells you when to turn, but does not say street names (the street names are written - it'll show "Turn right on Pine Street" at the top of the screen, and say aloud "Turn right in point three miles"). It does re-routing and multiple destinations. You can even add a stop along the way.

Can you turn a GPS unit on while flying on an airline?
IMG_2017

I always bring my GPS unit so I can find my way around an unfamiliar city. I've always wanted to turn it on while on the plane to see what it does, is that allowed? I think its just a receiver, and doesn't transmit anything.
I'm always interested in knowing how fast were traveling, and where we are while flying.

I'm sure it's not allowed. There is actually no legitimate reason for these laws and rules, but they won't let you turn it on. Nothing will happen anyway. You will see the same thing on your gps in the air that you do on the ground. The only thing different will be your altitude and speed readings.

Using it on a plane will not mess anything up on your gps, or in the plane. Cell phones wouldn't mess anything up either. It won't hurt to ask the crew and see what they say, but it is likely that they will say no.

Can you take GPS unit onto a plane for international flights?
Nikon GP-1

Can you take GPS unit onto a plane for international flights from Canada to the US and back again, like the ones for cars?
When I'm on the plane or when I'm out and about ?

GPS devices are allowed, but you can't turn them on during the entire flight. Most airlines have the airshow channel these days that shows your position, altitude, speed, distance to your destination etc., bascially the same thing and it won't get you in trouble or interfere with flight communications.
