What is the best value for a hand held GPS for outdoor hiking?

I am in the market to purchase a hand held GPS system. I am interested in the Garmin eTrex Venture Cx, but I seek other opinions. Which brand and model have worked well for you?

The three top picks in Backpacker Magazine's gear guide issue which arrived today include the Garmin eTrax Venture Cx $286, Garmin GPSmap 60CSx $538 and stripped down CS version $482, and the Magellan eXplorist XL $400. The latter two worked well in canyons and timber, while the first one drops to 125 foot radius precision in those areas.

What is the best hand held GPS to buy for hiking?

I wish to buy a hand held GPS to take walking, it does not need to fit on the dash of my car. Is there one that is easy to use without all sorts of complicated features I dont need just so as I dont get lost? It needs to have a long battery life and if possible not be made in China.

If depend whether you want maps. The cheapest ones are non-color, you can plot points and routes, and record tracks (like a trail of breadcrumbs) so you can at least follow your path back if your direct path to your starting point is blocked.

Better ones have color maps. Topo maps are best for hiking because they show more smaller roads, trails, smaller rivers and creeks, etc. and elevations. You might take a look at the Delorme PN-20 delorme.com (which come with topo maps) or Garmin eTrex series.

The eTrex mapping models only come with a basemap of major roads and major bodies of water, unless bundled with maps. H is high sensitivity, C is color, and x means it can use a memory card and has longest battery life (25 hrs on 2 AA).

Check Ebay for deals. I got a new eTrex Lengend HCx bundle that included 12V cable, suction cup mount, and City Navigator NT (street) maps for less than elsewhere without the extras. But I already had topo maps.

can i use a hand held gps as a replacement speedometer for a motorcycle?

is it acurate and will a good brand hand held gps stay online in city and open road

A GPS is more accurate at higher speeds, since it triangulates your position it take a couple of seconds at lower speeds to give the correct speed. The mechanical speedometer is more accurate as it runs off the mechanical interface on the motorcycle. Having said this you could use it as an alternate. and yes they are rugged enough to use on a motorcycle.
Motorcycle GPS's: http://www.gpsspecials.com/index.asp?Pag eAction=VIEWCATS&Category=21

Now for sole use, no. Here is an exert of the MOTORCYCLE EQUIPMENT GUIDE AND SAFETY EDUCATION.

39-27-16. Speedometer and odometer. Every motorcycle shall be equipped with a
properly operating speedometer and odometer calibrated in miles per hour and miles respectively
and shall be fully illuminated when the head lamp is activated.

After retiring from the Army after 24 years, I was around when they turned off the Selective Availability (SA) mode that slowed civilian refresh and impeded the accuracy to roughly 32'. The position calculated by a GPS receiver requires the current time, the position of the satellite and the measured delay of the received signal. The position accuracy is primarily dependent on the satellite position and signal delay.

To measure the delay, the receiver compares the bit sequence received from the satellite with an internally generated version. By comparing the rising and trailing edges of the bit transitions, modern electronics can measure signal offset to within about 1% of a bit time, or approximately 10 nanoseconds for the C/A code. Since GPS signals propagate at the speed of light, this represents an error of about 3 meters. This is the minimum error possible using only the GPS C/A signal.

Position accuracy can be improved by using the higher-chiprate P(Y) signal. Assuming the same 1% bit time accuracy, the high frequency P(Y) signal results in an accuracy of about 30 centimeters. This is optimum, there are other interferences that can affect the accuracy, weather, elctronic interferance etc....

So to blatantly say A GPS is only good to 20' is a crock.

Well I hope this helps

Is there a difference between hand-held GPS Navigation things you buy and builit in GPS Navigation in cars?

I am looking at cars, and it seems like if you want a GPS navigation system it costs thousands more, but if you go to circuit city or somewhere where they sell those hand-help GPS navigation units like from Garmin etc. they cost only a couple hundred. Is there a difference between these two that I can't see which explains why the car navigation systems cost so much more?

The difference is alot more money..!! Get a decent portable, and you can take it with you when you go in another car...They work the same portable and installed...The big difference is if your installed gp system goes on the blink and they have to take it out and fix it...Your going to pay big time for taking it out fixing it and re-installing it....Go portable...less money all around and just as good !!
