Can a regular gps handheld unit be used to map a golf course?

i was considering buying a sky caddie gps, but i was wondering if you can use a regular gps to map a golf course on your own. i've never used a gps so i really don't know anything about them.

Why bother for $150.00 you can get the iGolf Neo.
The website in "source" below rates it above the Skycaddie although this is mainly because of price.
And you can start playing straight away without fussing about mapping. Besides how accurate will your 200 meters be when you are going over undulating ground?
With the iGolf you will have a exceptional GPS and over a hundred bucks change.
But the Skycaddie is also a great GPS.
And both will be able to analayze your game.
Keep that head down and follow through!!!

What do a greater number of channels in a GPS handheld unit signify?

From RICH's answer, I can gather than the degree of precision is enhanced by having a greater number of channels.

But in theory, only 3 GPS satellites and a maximum of 4 can be overhead at a point at a specific time.

If that's the case, having to spend around a $$$ more on a unit with 24 channels seems pointless :S

The greater amount of satellites that the GPS unit can see or have the ability to see, the more accurate the reading.! Calculating with 5 satellites gives a far better reading than 2 or 3 satellite reception. This affects speed, altitude, and accuracy of location, ETA, etc. A quality GPS with several good readings from several satellites can be accurate down to 30 feet or so..

What practical things would a handheld GPS unit be useful for?

Are they mainly helpful for interstate travel? I would like to use mine for mapping locations in nature, but it doesn't seem to get precise enough for that.
I have the Garmin GPS III. What would be the best and intended use for this machine??

How is GPS used?

GPS receivers collect signals from satellites in view. They display the user's position, velocity, and time, as needed for their marine, terrestrial, or aeronautical applications. Some display additional data, such as distance and bearing to selected waypoints or digital charts.

Who uses GPS?

GPS is used to support land, sea, and airborne navigation, surveying, Geophysical exploration, mapping and geodesy, vehicle location systems, and a wide variety of additional applications.

I need to survey a plot of land for various heights and distances - can I use a handheld GPS unit to do this?

It's a hilly plot of land in the Philippines - I want to plot the profile of the land and various distances from a certain place (a house).
I mean to do it effectively. To within a couple of metres accuracy will do.

Most GPS only give '+' or '-' 2.1 metres at best.
