The in-dash GPS would preferably be good at directions, out of site or with detachable face when not in use or when I leave the car parked. Any suggestions appreciated.
ok great question, on crutchfield they have the eclipse cd7000, its the older model-(still beats alot of radio out there), but that radio is awesome, has the gps feature, and is detachable face,has really serious audio adjustments, great quality build and solid features. they have the outlet price of 449.99 and comes with the wiring harness,hardware kit,and detailed instructions. (that alone is about 35-40 bucks and comes with the purchase which is a plus) p.s- you have to purchase a navigation antenna which is the eclipse gps 105 - they run on crutchfield for about 200.00.-or if you can find a better price then run with that. (in all honesty, that radio was 699.99 at one point ,plus you had to buy that antenna which was 200, almost 900.00 dollars. i know what your thinking, i feel you have a desire for the big faced nagivation, but remeber this, they dont even compare as far a ecplise model im talking about. the eclispe radio is a single din, which should be perfect for you taste.compare for yourself and you will see, the eclipse will blow tons of radios in that category-(especially the one im talking about)good luck - be smart in the decision-itswell worth the time and the money you can save-believe me i know! have a great day!

I saw many third party In-Dash GPS exclusively made for new Honda Civic (8th generation) are available in other countries. However, the problem is ALL of them are made for left hand wheel model of Civic and does not fit into Australian made right hand drive Civic model. Would any one please share your recommendation if you happend to know anywhere that i can purchase a well designed In-Dash GPS navigation system for right hand wheel Civic. Many thanks.
dealership... if not find a aftermarket built in GPS there should be some for right hand drives out there, but i cant believe that a left hand drive gps wont fit in a right hand drive, i figured the dash would be the same set up

I am looking to buy a In dash gps/dvd/ipod stereo double din touchscreen type model. My friend said he would help me because he has installed headunits before. But are there anymore steps or are they more complicated installing the in dash gps? Is there a website that helps you out. Any information regarding this will be helpful
well its kind of the same as installing a radio but the only different you have is running the gps antenna and than hooking up the vss (vehicle speed sense) wire, the parking brake wire. but beside those it's like a regular radio. if you need help email me and i'll help you out with it.

I want a back-up camera for my wife's Expedition but don't want to add another screen to her dash (se already has a GPS unit) and I don't like the in-dash options. Are there any GPS units from Tom-Tom, Garmin, etc. that will display a back-up camera when the car is in reverse? Any other options? Thanks!
Your only option is to install a new GPS that does both. Circuit City sells a Pioneer ($1000+) that does all that you are looking for, and they also do custom installs.
You won't find a portable unit that does that.
I'm planing to buy a new GPS for my Toyota. Do you have any good suggestion? My requirements are simple:
1. good price
2. can not be easily stolen
3. update map easily
4. Bluetooth is better
I'm confused, which kind of GPS is better, portable GPS or a in dash GPS? Which brand do you recommend?
A quick comparison betweem in-dash and portable units is given below:
In-dash units:
Pros
* Look a lot neater
* Integration with stereo system so that audio can cut out when GPS directions are being given or in telephone calls.
* Harder to steal
* Better GPS reception
* Dead-reckoning (ie will still give you position when GPS signal is lost).
* Big screens
* No wires running across the dash.
Cons
* Unit and add-ons are expensive
* Expensive map upgrades
* Limited GPS features
* Some units only have coverage of major cities and highway.
* Can't take it with you if you don't travel with your vehicle.
* No regular speed camera updates.
* No regular firmware updates.
* No traffic updates
* Will the GPS unit still be supported in 5-10 years
Portable units:
Pros
* Units are cheaper
* Cheaper map upgrades
* Firmware regularly updated to provide new features or bug fixes
* Can take the GPS with you if you travel.
* Generally have more GPS features
* Most units have regular safety camera updates.
* Map coverage is generally quite good.
Cons
* Smaller screen
* Portability makes them easier to steal.
* Generally can't integrate with car audio system.
* No dead reckoning, although some units have begun to implement it.
I'm now using Eonon portable GPS which fit me very well. According to your requirement, maybe Eonon portalbe ones also quite suitbale for you.

Ford Trucks Offer GPS, In-Dash Computer, Web Access for $1195 ...

Say you manage a construction site and need a rugged laptop computer. Rather than spend $3,000-$5,000 for a ruggedized laptop computer and locking pedestal stand for your pickup truck, Ford offers an in-dash computer with Internet access and wireless keyboard for $1,195. "I bet it's the first time you've ever seen Google running on the dashboard of a vehicle," says Bill Frykman, Ford Work Solutions business development manager. The package also includes remote access, Bluetooth, and Garmin-developed navigation - in other words, a Happy Meal of Technology for less than the cost of integrated in-dash navigation alone. This Ford Work Solutions system is available on Ford F-Series pickups, E-Series (Econoline) vans, and the Ford Transit Connect mini delivery van. The only downsides are that you can't have Ford Sync, the industry-leading music and Bluetooth system, and the screen seems small for doing serious work. Ford says the center-dash location precludes a bigger screen, at least for now.
