Hi, i have a standard windows xp based laptop but i want to be able to use it as sort of a sat nav but on a larger scale. i have a gps receiver for the computer i just need some good navigation software that will track my position while I'm driving and point out any hot spots such as service stations truck stops etc
can anybody recommend any such software for laptops?
any help will be great
thanks!
I really enjoy Garmin Mapsource -- it comes with the CD versions of their street or topo maps. It can be set to work with a serial port, or USB GPS receiver - or a bluetooth one set to emulate a serial connection.
Those maps will work on your PC in realtime, and they're also licensed for upload to a garmin device, so you don't need two copies.
The map updates are about a hundred bucks (US), so not very expensive at all, considering the rest of the gear.
I have a laptop that i'm going to be carrying around with me in my car, i already have a car stand etc... I just want to know what the best GPS software is that i can use for the laptop for a car or if i want to use it on my boat as well. I have a satellite antenna to use with my laptop.
Thanks in advance =)
ESRI ArcGIS! - that is for professional analysts however and along with datasets would cost $1000's.

i want it to be able to move when the car moves so that it updates the movements by itself. where can i get a free software kinda like the tom toms or garmis gps?
You would also need to buy the hardware to receive from and communicate with satellites and connect this to the computer. Basically a satnav.

Last year I bought a small gps receiver to use with my PocketPC and I connected it with TomTom but my PocketPC broke. Now I have a mini-laptop and i'd like to somehow use it in the car for the same purpose. Does anyone know if there is software for windows xp that would allow me to do that? doesnt have to be tomtom.
Thanks
Have a look at the Tom Tom Home software from Tom Tom.
From memory I think you'll find that this will let you view the Tom Tom output.

I have and use MiroSoft Streets and Trips with the GPS. Works great right on. Shows where you have been and tells you where to turn if you enter where you want to go. Shows all of the roads and names etc... buy it you will like it.
