ARE MAGELLAN GPS DEVICES BETTER OR GARMIN ?
All GPS's will work everywhere. However the base map loaded on the GPS is usually dependant on where you bought it. Most GPS from America will have a base Americas map with high level roads etc. Without a good base map for your area your GPS is not going to be very useful as you wont be able to glance at it and know where you are in relation to ground fatures. You can of course add your own user waypoints if you know the co-ordinates. You can also purchase other base maps and load them on your GPS but they are quite expensive.
I have owned a Magellan and now plan on getting a Garmin, though the Magellan was quite good. My only reason is that Garmin offer better features for aviation.
The Magellan GPS 300
Where do I get maps for the Magellan Triton 300 handheld GPS? Are there any free maps out there?
Im not looking for turn by turn. I wanted this unit for a hiking novelty toy..
There aren't any free maps for the Triton. You can use Magellan's DirectRoute and topo maps. However, the Triton does not yet support turn-by-turn directions. In all seriousness, the Triton is a real dog of a GPS receiver. Return it if you can. It has a lot of bugs, and Magellan has horrible customer service and is very slow to fix these problems with firmware updates.

I’d like to buy a handheld GPS and I have doubts about this models. Which has the best technical support? And about downloads of maps of the world? Thank you for your help.
In this price range around $150, I would go with the Garmin eTrex Venture. It has a color screen, longer battery life and more memory than the Magellan. The maps are equivalent and Garmin has been good to me with technical support.

My question is, if it doesn't work for streets, how will it work for camping? Will I be able to use it anywhere but the back country? Should I invest in a better one, or get this one just for camping? Would a normal one work for the back country too??
THANKS, here's the posted inf:

Although Magellan makes many good GPS units Garmin is by far the best in technology and for the same money. I went through the same dilemma you did when I first purchased a handheld. My suggestion is the Garmin GPSMAP 76CSX. It has everything you seem to be looking for. I use http://www.gpsunitsandaccessories.com/ for my gps needs, they are reasonably priced and have always provided good service. They will also help you if you have more questions concerning a purchase. Best wishes on your gps adventures.
I have a Magellan 300 and whenever i enter coordinates in it they are always off by about 16/17 miles in the SE direction. I input the coordinates right and everything is fine. What am i/the gps doing wrong?
P.S. And it says i have full satellite reception.
Maybe it was programed into your device because consumer GPS devices are not 100% accurate as to your location, this I think, not being an expert

Magellan GPS Blazer 12
The GPS Blazer12 is a self-contained hand-held GPS receiver designed for general purpose position locating and navigation. It has a built-in antenna located at the top of the receiver, a backlit display, and keypad. Using two AA batteries, inserted from the battery door found at the back of the receiver, the GPS Blazer12 will operate for up to 20 hours.Whether hiking through the woods or traveling back roads, you always know where you are with the Magellan GPS Blazer 12 Satellite Navigator. It displays bearing, heading, distance, speed, and more on its three navigation screens. Nine coordinate and thirteen map datum systems allow you to plot your position on almost any map.
Setting up the Blazer 12 was easy. We just installed the batteries and initialized the receiver by answering a few on-screen questions about our location and the time and date. The unit assumes that you already know a little about basic map reading, longitude, and latitude, but the User Manual introduces you to the Blazer 12’s features in no time.
