What is the best value for a hand held GPS for outdoor hiking?

I am in the market to purchase a hand held GPS system. I am interested in the Garmin eTrex Venture Cx, but I seek other opinions. Which brand and model have worked well for you?

The three top picks in Backpacker Magazine's gear guide issue which arrived today include the Garmin eTrax Venture Cx $286, Garmin GPSmap 60CSx $538 and stripped down CS version $482, and the Magellan eXplorist XL $400. The latter two worked well in canyons and timber, while the first one drops to 125 foot radius precision in those areas.

What is the best gps hand held unit for outdoor recreation use?

I'm going to assume you mean "off road" ie. hiking.
So you want fairly simple, with good battery life.

I'd suggest the Garmin Legend, or Etrex if altitudes are important.

If you go boating, you want waterproof.
If you go 4WD, you want in-car.
You need to provide more data !

Can you use a GPS to find property boundaries?

I have a mountain property and need to find my boundaries. I know that surveyors have expensive GPS equipment. I am wondering if a GPS you can buy at the outdoor store, can be used to locate
the corners of my property.
What brand shall I buy?
No dumb answers please--if you don't own a GPS and don't know what you're talking about, please don't answer.

I've used a GPS unit often in my work and it will help you locate the corners of your property....provided that you have the information you need to first know where those corners are.

The easiest thing would be to have the actual GPS coordinates in latitude and longitude of the 4 corners before you go out with your unit...then you could just trek along until you find the right coordinates (although...be careful, GPS units are usually accurate only to a few meters).

As an alternative, if you know the dimensions of your property and the compass direction, you could do a little math and calculate the coordinates for your property.

Outdoor enthusiasts, any recommendation on GPS devices?

Was thinking about either a Garmin GPSMAP 60CSX GPS or Garmin Rhino 520 or 530HCx etc for a b'day present.

The boyfriend likes 4WDriving and also goes out to sea to fish so I was thinking GPSMAP 60 that also caters to marine aspect. But I really have no idea so any help or suggestions will be most appreciated.

Any other devices anyone can recommend? somewhere mid- range priced.
Should add that I'm not after any Sat.Navs. but something that actually gives GPS co-ordinates. Thanks.

I have a Magellan Maestro 4000. I really like it and the features it has. If you're not in a major hurry to get it, go on e-bay...you can get a good deal if you're patient and persistant!

What ever you get, go with one that has the larger screen, you won't regret it!

How good are Garmin maps for outdoor pursuits.?

Do GPS devices give detailed maps eg. streams, fields? Where do I get therse maps

Yes, Garmin's "Topo" maps give that kind of detail. You can purchase them direct from http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/
or from places like Amazon.com. Of course, you need a compatible Garmin GPS so be sure you check that before you order the maps.
