portable gps

Need advice on what is a good portable GPS system to get. Can I please have sme advice from people who recently got one. My price range is around $500.

i have a Magellan gps unit and i love it, its great i can find everything i need.....its accurate within in a house or business, also garmins are very good my friend has one and its very similar to the Magellan database and also is very accurate..they are really two great machines, i also used this site to buy mine and my friend used it also..just wanted to add i have driven across country with both a garmin and the magellan on our motorcycles we never had any problems and never had to input a new map and they both run off of 20gigs of memory...

I just want to get a portable GPS for my car, and I'd like to know what the best one available is. I don't like buying shoddy merchandise!

I own the Garmin c340. That one is very nice. It gives you turn by turn directions, including giving you the street names. You can choose which voice you want to use, whether male or female. You can even choose which accent you want it to have.
The unit also has a point of interest feature which allows you to find the nearest location of any restaurant, hotel, gas station, car wash, bank, etc. no matter what location you happen to be.

I bought a TomTom portable GPS navigation for my car but the equipment will only allow you to stick it to the car windshield... I don't like it on the windshield because it blocks my view.. Is there any thing I can buy that allows me to stick it to the dashboard or somewhere else near other than the windshield?

I need to get a portable GPS system.
It cannot be an in-dash one because I have a 2000 Toyota Camry.
Also it must be one of the talking ones that tells you where to go. I will be traveling from Indiana to St. Louis so I need one that has an accurate map.

So, I'm looking for the best GPS I can get for a good price. Can anybody tell me what type to buy? If you can provide me with a link it would be even better!

It is not an easy question to answer but you can't go wrong with the top 3 GPS manufacturers PND models they have to offer.
With that said, Garmin currently is the most popular GPS model in NA, selling about 55% of all PND GPS sold in NA.
If price is no an issue, try the Garmin Nuvi 880 which is currently Garmin top of the line PND model. If you wish to save a few bucks, try the Garmin Nuvi 760 which is an excellent choice. Don't buy EOL stuff since you will want to have a model that is supported for a while.
If you feel Garmin is not for you, consider the TomTom 930 or the Magellan Maestro 4250 or 4050.
You can also consider buying the NOH Garmin Nuvi 760 for only $329 from Auto Nav 2000 Plus, Inc that includes the Garmin factory ONE year factory warranty, the unit comes with pretty much everything you will need on a GPS device or if you are worry about cost but wish to have a portable GPS that includes TTS, try the Magellan RoadMate 2200T NOH for only $119.00 again from Auto Nav 2000 Plus, Inc.
