I've heard there are competitions where ordinary people in teams of two compete to see who can complete a given route using only their mapping and navigation skills (no GPS). Is there such a thing, and where would I find more information?
Yes, they are called road rallies. There are three types. 1. timed 2. gimmick 3. performance. They all these things in common. A team - vehicle, driver, navigator. Also have a start location,a route, and a ending location. the most fun i think is the gimmick. Also they all have rules of the game and instructions

My kids are both in High School and I put one in my older son's car. I think it is the greatest thing! It gives me piece of mind when he is driving. He is a good kid, but a few of his friends have been racing. I am happy to know my son isn't, (at least in his car)

is there a more accurate way to monitor the speed of a race car entering, or leaving the pits?
The transponders and system they use right now is very accurate.
radar...'nuff said.
laser. not accurate enough to gage speed.
gps, too broad of a signal area to be accurate.
Currently they can time a driver/car to the 1/1000th of a second. How much more accurate do you have to be?
If they want to eliminate the pit road violations, let NASCAR mandate a rev limiter like INDY uses. I hope they don't.

How can you actually customize one so it can be sent to the dealer so you can go check it out and possibly buy it. It just says here are some cars that that dealer is carrying. I want this Mustang with racing stripes and certain wheels with the gps system.... and their cars are not customized with it but there is an option. How can I go about actually ordering a my car with the stuff I would want?
You don't If they don't have it. It has to be custom made, and in that case they're not going to custom make a car, You're THINKING about buying. You can customize the car upon placing an order from the dealer.
Hi, im 14 turning 15 in sept. and considering there arent many more days left before i can drive (with a parental of course), i was considering a good first car, i dont have much money buut can get to about 10 grand with my parents help by then, i dont know much about cars or mechanics, however i really would like to learn more about it; and well i really would like to race and get my car to go "really fast", again i dont know as much as i should about the whole racing world and racing mechanics, its just something i would really like to get into more than anything, i also want a kick ass stereo system, im really good with audio and electronics, but i dont know about car audio and car electronics, as far as amps and what i need goes, but i do really want some woofers and tweeters in my trunk, no doubt... i would absolutely love a touch screen with a gps and a bluetooth capable system so that i ca talk handsfree.... however its not that important.
i could probably find a way to get more than 10 grand, so thats flexible, so if anyone has any idea what a goodd car would be, or where i could learn about cars and mechanics, or where i could learn about car audio, please leave an answer with anything at all, thnx
ive been rreally admiring the nisaan 300zx's as well as the 350's but there a bit pricey, well not the 300 but, just to give you an idea over all
i intend to keep my parents in the loop about whats going on with my car and i have a job, so thats how i will take care of licensing fees and maintenince, etc., i do know how to chang a tire, replace an oil filter and a couple more things(im not tottally ignorant of cars) i just would like to get more into it,i intend to tell my parents what car i am purchasing as its thier money and theres no way they would not know what car it is before i purcased it and i have considered insurance..... thanks sglmom for extending your parenthood to me though
First of all -- the vehicles you mentioned .. well .. as someone who was a Long Term Single Parent (and yes, I did have a SON) -- I would NEVER have EVER allowed him to drive one of them -- EVER ... (too dangerous ... these are the ones that the Teenagers DIE in -- all you have to do is look at the local paper and see how much this happens).
I would RECOMMEND something simple (4 doors) ... used, look at the Reliability of the Vehicle (with your parents from such sources as Consumer Reports) ... and something that Is NOT going to get you into trouble.
THEN ...
BEFORE you even go out and Obtain (Purchase) the vehicle -- I STRONGLY SUGGEST That you attend your High School (or Community Center After School Program) for their Auto Shop Class -- LEARN how to change your oil/filter ... your tires ... how to MAINTAIN and Check your Vehicle .. and that comes with this course!
AFTER all that -- you need to think about INSURANCE TOO -- and that is MIGHTY EXPENSIVE for Teenagers ... so the Smaller, More Economical Car is the WAY TO GO.
NOW ...
How are you going to pay for the Fuel .. the Insurance .. .the Maintenance and everything else (including Licensing Fees)?
At this time ... I suggest that YOUR parents make the decision for YOU .. and that is to (when your State legally permits and YOUR PARENTS approve) that you LEARN -- and that is with THEM in the Car .. and using their Vehicle (an Older one, of course) to practice with.
NO stereo (too much noise -- too distracted -- this EQUALS DEATH, Injuries, ACCIDENTS) ... Don't IRRITATE the others on the Road, and ... for gosh sakes -- DON'T MESS with any "Stereo" while Driving!
(I can definitely attest to the DANGER of a Distracted Teen when I picked up my Children at their school -- that STUPID teen was reaching over and adjusting the Stereo and NOT looking -- and I was SCARED to DEATH (I knew this -- I SLOWED DOWN Deliberately) -- but they DID Cause an Accident!

» Swaziland, Day 1 – Planning your road trip with a GPS - Make ...
We’re on the road again, out in the field with the Project: Exposure program and this month it’s my turn.
This trip is set to involve a good deal of driving over long distances, and my geographic knowledge of South Africa is limited. I enjoy looking at maps and plotting a route but for this trip using a GPS sounded like a great idea.
Why use a GPS?It’s not just the navigational assistance that comes with a GPS but a greater predictability of time and distance, which leads to a far more relaxed and enjoyable drive. You know exactly how long I have left until you reach your destination, how far it is until you have to make a turn and where there’s a petrol station along your route.
