Going to buy a Garmin i2 Streetpilot GPS Car Navigation System...how do I use? Do I need a monthly fee?

Can I just take it out of the box and use? Do I need to download maps and things for it? I have no idea...

You can take it out of the box and use it. You need a clear unobstructed view for quickest lock on to the satellites.... you should update the poi (points of interest), by going to
http://www8.garmin.com/support/agree.jsp ?id=1031. It will come preprogrammed with maps, but make sure you update it by using the website (instructions listed below)

Instructions for using this software
Download the self-extracting archive file for your Streetpilot i2 onto your hard drive.
Connect your Streetpilot i2 to a free USB port on your PC with the correct PC interface cable.
Unzip the files in the archive by running the downloaded executable file.
Follow the instructions provided by the launched update application on your computer.

you should have no fees unless you sign up for extra services (traffic updates, etc)...

You may need a battery or a connector to connect it to your lighter in your car for power (check the box on power requirements).

You would connect it to your computer using a USB cable.

how much is the monthy service for GARMIN i3 STREETPILOT GPS CAR NAVIGATION?

What monthly service? GPS signals are free. I'd suggest a Garmin Nuvie series that have a SD card slot to download Points of Interest (POI) with geographical area or nationwide store location information. The database is young and growing fast and it's fre as well. I have a Garmin Nuvie 200, bottom of the line at $400, and it to has the SD card slot for down loading. Unlike the Street Pilot series, it's no bigger than a deck of playing cards. Fits easily in your shirt or pant pocket. It's their personal communicator series and does every thing Street pilot does plus more in a smaller package.

TomTom one or Maggelan roadmate 2000 or Garmin StreetPilot i3 Vehicle GPS Navigator?

Hi I am about to purchase a gps car navigation unit, basically I am driving from MO to Orlando and back and think it would be better than mapquest. Of these two that I mentioned above, what would you recommend and what are the pros and cons if you have experienced any? The Magellan and Garmin are almost a hundred bucks cheaper but the Tomtom seem to have more features , I don't know! But these are the three cheapest models out there. Thanks people.

You can compare those three devices side-by-side here:

http://www.gpsreview.net/compare-gps/?gp s=603-990-962

Of those three, I would eliminate the StreetPilot i3 from your list. It has a very small screen, doesn't use a touch screen display, and doesn't include pre-installed maps. It is the oldest device of the three you have mentioned and wouldn't be the best pick.

Of the remaining two, here are the primary differences. The TomTom ONE includes maps of Canada while the RM 2000 only has the US 48 states. The TomTom ONE is also a smaller size and weight, yet retains the same size screen so it will be more portable.

The TomTom ONE also has more advanced routing features such as advanced planning and the ability to create itineraries and save them for future use.

Here is a review of the TomTom ONE:

And here is info on the RM 2000:

What is the best GPS for someone who drives lots in Canada and the USA? Mio or Garmin?

I am looking at a New Mio DigiWalker C210s GPS Car Navigation System

is this better than the Garmin-i5 StreetPilot??

Does anyone actually know?

it all depends on what specific options you need in the device. Garmin is the better known maker, but, like I said, it all depends on what you like and need.

  • You, Too, Can Be a GPS Geek

You know those maps you see at shopping malls and site seeing areas that have that red dot – “You Are Here”. That’s kind of what a GPS is, except it moves with you wherever in the world you are. It’s not restricted to a building or event area. In addition, it helps you find where you want to go. You just tell it the location you want to find and it gives you directions to get there. Newer models will guide you audibly, tell you nearby attractions, restaurants and gas stations and get you back on track when you turn the wrong way.

GPS, or Global Positioning System, is made up of a series of 28 orbiting satellites. It was originally developed by the military, but has spread to consumer use. If you have a GPS unit, it receives satellite signals that help it to determine your location. Consumer GPS units are accurate within few yards or meters, but the military and government models are even more accurate. Your GPS unit can give you instructions to another location if software for mapping is installed, which most for consumer use do.
