tomtom gps

Would like some information about a Tomtom GPS?
I am coming to Hawaii in May for a holiday and I saw Tomtom One third addition GPS on sale at Walmart.
Half the price than in Australia.
What I would like to know is
1)Do they use an XD or SP memory card?
2)If it has an internal memory and not a card and I download the Australian Maps when I get home,will I loose the USA maps?
3)Can you download maps from other companies or only Tomtom,as the new maps cost as much as the GPS?

Are you sure about that model and the memory card? I understand that the maps are pre loaded for the USA,just don't want to loose them when I put Australian maps on,cause I intend to go back to the mainland in a year or so .

Some maps (normally popular countries) are already installed, you buy local maps and updates on an SD card for Australia. Keep in mind though, I had my Tom Tom stolen when I just ran into a milk bar, I got another one and downloaded a phone home software if it ever happens again. Antitheft.net.au, it also saved me some $$ on my home insurance.

I am planing to buy GARMIN or TomTom GPS and looking for if they are up-datable in future whenever I need.I noticed none of website that has advertisement or even in news paper ad.says it was up datable.How do I find if GPS is up-datable or not?
Hi Tanya,your answer is good but since I don't know what model number of tom tom I couldn't say.

I know that Tom Toms are. My sister has one and she updates the maps on it and can download other voices and stuff. IDK about Garmin though, maybe go to an electronics store and ask a salesperson.

My mom bought a TomTom GPS, and it doesn't say what model on it or on the instruction booklets but when we're trying to use it, it always says Waiting for valid GPS signal at the bottom left corner. So I don't know what is wrong with it.

Ok...it should automatically find the GPS satellites.

Do this:

Take it outside...look under Change preferences...go to about the 6th menu and you should see an icon called "GPS settings". It should show you how many satellites it can see...it will lock on to the strongest ones. If this is the first time, it will take a couple of minutes. Once it has a fix...you can turn it off and it will remember, normally for a few days, where the satellites should be.

If none of this works, try this. Look on the bottom of the device...screen pointing at the sky...you should see a small hole marked reset. Get a needle, a straightened paper clip or something like that. Press it into the hole. That will give it a hard restart and should reload the programing.

Let me stress this, cause people don't think about it if they have never used a GPS before...go out side so it can see the sky!!!! The GPS signal will not go thru a roof normally.

Next question I get is then why does it work in a car....the windshield!

I thought i read somewhere that TomTom GPS units do NOT tell you what side of the road your destination is located on when you get there.I was told the Garmin models DO.Is this accurate?

The tomtom does distinguish between left side of the road or right I don't know if the garmin does , i have a tomtom 720 and it clearly states if your on the right or left, The TomTom uses a better mapping system (teleatlas) and of lately has out done (navteq) the maps that garmin uses, have a look at this web site http://www.gpsreview.net/navteq-vs-tele- atlas/

I bought a tomtom gps system a year ago and never used it and now i want to use it. i moved and now i don't know what i did with the directions. i need to know how to get to a place and i want to download the direction on my gps. i got the cables for it. so how do i do it?

Go to TomTom.com and search for you model. There should be something somewhere with a link to a manual or online instructions.
