Definition High Definition Television

My girlfriend and I are looking into getting our first high definition television. I am hoping to get around a 32" at least and am going to try to not exceed $750. Are there any certain brands that you would recommend. I'm looking into getting an LCD because I really don't like DLP and have heard some pretty negative things. Any help would be appreciated and thank you in advance.

Tough to make your budget, with a quality 32" LCD, but you can with good shopping. First, don't bother looking at the 1080p sets, as you can't realistically tell the difference from a 720p/1080i resolution, and you will save money.

The top two brands in 32", for BOTH performance AND reliability, are Panasonic Viera and Sony Bravia. A little bit less expensive, but still good quality is Toshiba Regza followed, perhaps, by Sharp Aquos and Samsung. If you can't afford one of these brands, do yourself a favor and wait while you save up so you can get quality.

I'm interested in buying a blu ray player but I don't have a high definition TV. Can I still use it to watch blu ray movies.

Yes. The picture and sound quality may not be up to par, but as long as you have a Blu Ray player, you should be good to go.

Will we all have to eventually transition to HDT?

Since late 1940's, the television signals you can receive by putting up an antenna have been analog. Same as radio signals. We are talking channels 2,3,4,5,... on an old television.

Most of these CHANNELS have digital versions which newer TV's can deal with.

A "Converter box" for about $75 allows older TV's to pick up the new digital channels from an antenna. The antenna connects to the box, the box feeds analog on channel 3 or 4 to the old TV.

Thats the "Digital Transition".

The 1940's television standard is 480 lines of video per screen. This was enough to fill a nine-inch screen. But to remain backwards compatible - this standard could never change.

About year 2000 - after years of testing, debating, the government helped define 2 more video standards: 720 and 1080.

These are called High Definition.

If a TV station broadcasts these higher-definition signals, they are Digital. (we are not going to repeat the mistakes of analog with year 2000 delivery).

The first one is going away in 2009 and the frequencies will be given to Police, Fire, and some cell phone use.

the tv is a 720 p or i, I cant remember. The brand is a " ViewSonic".

Buy an HDMI cable and connect it from the HDMI imput in the back of your tv (your tv DOES have one, right?) to the HDMI imput in the back of the PlayStation.

Or you can connect the red, white and yellow cables (RCA cables) to the red, white and yellow imputs in the back of your tv.

HDMI gives a better picture, though.

If you do this and you can't see anything when you turn on the tv, make sure that you are on the correct "imput".

To cycle the different imputs keep pressing the tv/video button on the tv's remote until you see the Playstation 3 images.

What are the pros and cons of HDTV . Are the old TVs going to be obsolete ?

You can find really good deals on walmart.com.
Hdtv's are smaller, have better pictures, and yes eventually the old tv's will be obsolete. Make sure you get one with a high contrast ratio, and a resolution of no less than 720p, and a ntsc/atsc tuner.
