Definition High Samsung Television

My High Definition television did not include the ATSC tuner. It is a Toshiba 30HF83 with a DVI/HDCP input. I had purchased a Samsung SIR-T351 set top box which does recieve the High Definition stations. The problem is I need to have the antenna rotor pointed directly at each individual transmitter station. Another set just purchased which is a Toshiba 37HL67 has both the NTSC and the ATSC tuner incorporated. This set does not require the antenna pointed directly at the transmitters. All stations come in great no matter where the outdoor antenna is pointed.
Is there a better set top ATSC tuner box on the market as it appears to be a major improvement in reception? If possible I would like to have a tuner with HD recording capability. Is there such a model available ? Similar to what is done with a VCR and NTSC broadcast now. I do not want to purchase a service such as TIVO as it requires a monthly fee.

I have that receiver, it is decent. But It is only as good as the antenna that you have. I have a channel master UHF bowtie antenna with a uhf amplifier. I get reception for two distant cities at 35-55 miles each with a rotator. The antenna is on the roof. Remember that HD Tv is broadcast primarliy in UHF not VHF frequencies.

as for the recoding capability, I am looking for the same HD capability in a stand alone box. LG did make one but it is not now offered. Sony has one but it is very expensive over $1000. You can do it yourself with a pc and a hd tuner card and myth tv. I want the stand alone solution and wil wait for Panasonic or someone to do it

i know i already asked this, but i really have to clarify.
I have a 42 inch LCD Samsung HDTV, and im looking to buy a ps2 slimline for christmas for the great ps2 originals.
here are some answers i'd like to know, and dont mention newer HD games such as GT4. I'm NOT gonna get a ps3, and before you ask, i have a HDTV because i have an xbox 360.

1. How will the ps2 look overall on my hdtv? i can always set it back to 4:3 or any kind of adjustments.
2. Im looking to buy some older games, like Final Fantasy 10, and games that old, how will Final Fantasy 10 specifically look?
3. Taking in considering that i sit 2meters away from the screen?
4. I played Resident Evil 4 for Gamecube on my tv, how will the ps2 games look compared to it?
5. How about if i used my PS2 with my 10"x8" widescreen(sorta :p) computer monitor?
6. I heard i need some extra cables for better visuals, which ones will i need?
7. Is there a way to temporarily change my TV's native resolution, or just change its resolution to 480p or something like that?

and lastly, ive heard some bad things about ps2 slimline, should i get phat or slim (supposing i can find a phat somewhere) and what the prices will be? thank you

1. it won't look that bad because i always play my ps2 on my 42 inch hdtv and it still has good graphics just not the best
2 and 3. they will look good and i usually play old games like need for speed hot pursuit 2 and tony hawk pro skater 2 and they look good from close distance
4. It will look a little better than the gamecube because ps2 has better graphics
5. I've never tried a computer monitor but im guessing it will be the same
6. You can probably get a component cable which is better resolution than an a/v cable
7. It will change automatically because it won't but hd to play games that don't support that.

i have a ps2 fat version and it is better protected and has fans inside to the dust won't get in and it will cool down the system and the slot to put in disks is a lot safer from dust than the ps2 slim because the slimline leaves the disk reading lenses unprotected.
A new slimline will cost around $120 and the fat version you will find only at gamestop or online where they sell used systems for cheaper prices

Ok, so I know very little about tv's and so forth to start off with. Today I bought a 46 inch samsung HDTV, 1080p and all that. When I connected my cable to the tv, however, I noticed no channels looked very good, even ones such as ESPN that are always supposed to be HD. So I asked my friend about it and he said you need a hdtv box or something. Can someone please explain what the deal is with this and what I need to do. So my tv in and of itself isn't enough to watch high def cable tv?

You need to pay for it. AND get the decoder box your cable company will charge you for to rent... The only signals they transmit raw are ANALOG signals for CABLE READY devices, NOT DTV, with the rest all being digital encoded signals you need a box to decode. No high definition without the decoder...

I have been wanting a High Definition television for quite some time now and my tax return is coming, the time has come. I am torn on which television I should choose. I want at least a 32" or 37" lcd to put in my bedroom. I can get a 37" vizio for the same price as a 32" samsung or a 32" sony bravia, about $800.00. I also see a westinghouse, a sanyo, and an emerson 32" for about $600.00 each. I don't know whether to sacrifice size for "quality" or to take a chance with the larger size and hope all goes well. Does anyone own any of the lcd tv's I mentioned above? If so please post a review or comment on the product, pros and cons please. Thank you in advance

I'd suggest a logical approach.

1) Decide what you will be watching.
- if DVD and HD TV only you don't need a 1080p HDTV. A 720p model is fine. If you intend to watch Blu-ray or HD DVD movies you should consider a 1080p model.

2) How far away will you be watching from? Ideally you need a TV with a diagonal size about 0.4x to 0.7x the viewing distance. The closer distance is appropriate for a 1080p HDTV and the further one for 720p models. (See the 1st link for a handy calculator for 720p HDTVs)

3) What type of TV are you looking for?
- You probably know already, but consider.
- LCD is best at small sizes and is more energy efficient than plasma.
- rear projection is probably out because it is best at large sizes
- plasma typically gives a better picture than LCD (higher contrast), but is more expensive

4) What models are available in the size and resolution you need (720p vs 1080p). See the 2nd link.

5) Focus on those of the type you want (e.g. LCD) and that meet your budget limits (allow an extra 20% if you are looking at MSRP but not if you have a list of "Street prices")

5) Focus on specs. Look for the higher contrast ratio models, ones with higher brighteness ratings, and faster response times. Consider warranty, connectivity and style.

6) Read professional and consumer reviews on a short list (including on-line user views since this is often where the real info re problems. support, etc. come out) and go and see the model(s) you may be interested in.

7) Make a decision and select a place to buy based on, for example, local support, price, extended warranty price/availability (may or may not be on-line).

8) Order.
