High Definition Availability?
Home Theater Wire Mess - Before

I just recently upgraded to a 50" hp plasma television, obviously I've turned into a major couch potato over the last week. I have also upgraded my DirecTV to the hi-def service. My only gripe is that my local channels are not available in hi-def. I live in Greenville, SC and I know it is, by no means, the largest television market in the nation, but with over 3 million people in the market, it also isn't the smallest. I'm sure I'm not the only person set up for hi-def service, so my question is how can I find if/when my local channels will offer high definition service and who can I contact to start putting a little pressure on the local networks to speed up the process of getting it started.

I checked both the DirecTv website and Googled. Direct shows no upcoming plans, as you probably know. Dish shows they have Greenville in a future plan, but how future is not indicated.

If you can/want to put up a good quality aerial (now referred to as "off-air" antennas) you can receive your locals in HD if your broadcast area has switched over to HD. The individual websites for your ABC, etc., will tell you. Cheaper antennas tend to allow too much bleedover interferrence so that the digital signal doesn't have a chance to come thru properly. Channel Master Crossfire brand is one good example of a decent antenna.

Not sure who you contact to speed up the process. Sorry. Its an expensive and time consuming one with the stations getting the permission, the bandwidth, and all that.

Also keep in mind that your plasma will demand more power and a strong signal if you end up using an outdoor aerial for off-air.

I think Swanni is pretty off the mark with this. Granted, it appears that DirecTV has stopped expanding its HD lineup. However, why this catches anyone off-guard is amazing to me. When DirecTV launched D10, the goal was clear - serious expansion of national HD channels. D11's goal, which seemed pretty clear at the time it was launched, was very different. First off, DirecTV went on a local HD bender - they've been adding HD locals at a brisk clip. That was part of what D11 was all about - that and the fact that from what I understand part of the spot-beam capability of D10 was damaged, and wasn't operating to full capacity, limiting what that satellite could do for local HD feeds. I know...
