High Definition Cable Television

Ok, so I know very little about tv's and so forth to start off with. Today I bought a 46 inch samsung HDTV, 1080p and all that. When I connected my cable to the tv, however, I noticed no channels looked very good, even ones such as ESPN that are always supposed to be HD. So I asked my friend about it and he said you need a hdtv box or something. Can someone please explain what the deal is with this and what I need to do. So my tv in and of itself isn't enough to watch high def cable tv?

You need to pay for it. AND get the decoder box your cable company will charge you for to rent... The only signals they transmit raw are ANALOG signals for CABLE READY devices, NOT DTV, with the rest all being digital encoded signals you need a box to decode. No high definition without the decoder...

You don't. To achieve any manor of surround sound you will need a completely separate component system, complete with at least 5 speakers and an A/V receiver. You can acquire these systems ranging from just a few hundred dollars to thousands of dollars, and so on.... The TV itself will not produce any sort of surround sound and don't be fooled by stickers that say "tru-surround" or any other form of that. If you want to learn how to actually hook it up. you can find hook-up guides on the Internet. For me to explain how to hook-up your system would be futile without a list of your components.

Depends on the provider. DirecTV charges $10 a month for HD channels. But remember you also have to buy or lease an HD receiver to watch them.

i was wondering if i get a high definition cable box will i get high definition and if not, will the standerd stations improve. and finally if i wont get high defintion then why do i have those component hookups. thanks

It has those so that you can plug in high definition, but it won't quite display high definition on your tv, but it will make widescreen movies look slightly better i think.

And answerer below me I think is actually right, sorry if i gave wrong info.
