My DVD player broke. My television is a not a high definition set. I have to buy a new DVD player but I figured I might as well buy a High Definition DVD player and wait until my old television dies. I have my regular/old DVD's that I like to watch. Can a non HD tv and non HD DVD's still work in a High Definition DVD player?
Yes it can, you still have the RCA plugs in the back, the high def components are for example watching TV in 1080i 720p (assuming you have a cablebox) ..... and so on... also to play games and other inputs that use components
DVD players will always play DVDs even blu-ray

I do have a HD ready television.
If by high-definition DVD you are talking about the HD-DVD standard, then you need an HD-DVD player. I should tell you that there is another high-definition standard called blu-ray. They are competing technologies that both require new players and they are not compatible with each other. I would wait a couple years until these standards are much, much cheaper. In the mean time, you shouldn't worry about buying DVDs since the new players will play DVDs just fine so when you get a new player, you won't need to worry about re-buying your current DVDs.

Hi, my dvd player is normal and my tv is hd ready, will i be able to watch a hd dvd in hd?
Nope because the DVD player can't handle HD. Everything involved, (the DVD, the player and the TV) must all be HD and be connected properly.

My plasma tv's instruction manual says that the recommended source (dvd player) for my display is something that is in the 1080i format. Now I notice there is a fairly new format called 1080p and many dvd players advertise themselves as that. What happens if I buy one of these new 1080p dvd players but my plasma was manufactured before that format came out, will my display revert to 1080i or does the dvd player know what format is best for my display and automatically adjust for best available picture that the tv is capable of producing?
Now, as a person who is looking into buying an HDTV in the near future, I can't claim that my statements are accurate to the letter, as I've never owned one. However...
As far as I know, if you plug a 1080p device into a 1080i TV, the TV will convert 1080p into 720p, allowing you to view it. It will NOT display in TRUE 1080p, however.
1080i TVs are really 720p TVs that allow the viewing of 1080p, without having to shell out the cash for full 1080p viewing. It shrinks the image proportionately.
In less technical terms, if you bought that DVD player, you'd likely be able to play the movies, just not at the FULL resolution they were intended for. Then again, why buy a DVD player that plays 1080p? Assuming we're talking about regular DVD, not HD-DVD or Blu-Ray... All that a 720p/1080p DVD player would do, if I understand correctly, is stretch the image to the edges of your TV, to avoid the black bars on the sides of your image. If that's the case, it might even distort the aspect ratio to a very strange "stretched" or "fish-eye" perspective. Sounds like a ripoff to me.
If you ask me, buy the cheapest player you can, deal with the black bars, and wait until the Blu-ray/HD-DVD war is over, and then restock your collection with true HD 720p/1080p movies, heh.
We are considering purchasing a new television set, and it seems that considering the size, all we are finding is HDTV. Considering the cost of the set, I was hoping to avoid additional increased charges to upgrade my cable or satellite to HD. Can a set that's designated as HD receive signals from conventional cable, satellite, or non-HD DVD players? If so, will the picture be comparable to what I am currently receiving, or worse?
The television will receive any signals from cable, satellite and non HD-DVD players. You could buy a DVD player that does upconvert the DVD to near HD quality. These players run around $70 to $100. You will need an HDMI cable to do this. If you are spending the money for the new set you might as well upgrade your cable or satellite service for HD. I find it hard to watch a program not broadcast in HD now. FYI the HD signal is much better than anything your viewing now.
