We are considering purchasing a new television set, and it seems that considering the size, all we are finding is HDTV. Considering the cost of the set, I was hoping to avoid additional increased charges to upgrade my cable or satellite to HD. Can a set that's designated as HD receive signals from conventional cable, satellite, or non-HD DVD players? If so, will the picture be comparable to what I am currently receiving, or worse?
The television will receive any signals from cable, satellite and non HD-DVD players. You could buy a DVD player that does upconvert the DVD to near HD quality. These players run around $70 to $100. You will need an HDMI cable to do this. If you are spending the money for the new set you might as well upgrade your cable or satellite service for HD. I find it hard to watch a program not broadcast in HD now. FYI the HD signal is much better than anything your viewing now.

I know you need 2 sources for the picture-in-picture (PIP) to work. I have an outside antenna also. I can use the PIP with the antenna and the satellite, but the antenna only shows local channels. I want to be able to use the PIP to show all the satellite channels. The current hookup is (a) outside antenna coax into a splitter with one coax output directly to the television and the other coax output into the satellite receiver, which is necessary so that the satellite receiver can display some of the off-air channels that transmit in high definition; and (b) the satelitte coax directly into the satellite receiver and then out to a VHS/DVD recorder/player.
There are two ways of doing this, but before you spend money on this make sure your TV can have an input on the PIP mode otherwise it's not worth it. 1) You have to get another receiver and hook one up to the ant.(coax) and the other box hook up to an input on your TV. 2) For only one box you would have to get a dual tuner DVR box that is made to hook up 2 TVs. Hook TV1 through the coax and TV2 through an input. If you're going record you can only watch that station until your scheduled recording stops on one of the tuners of the DVR box.

How do I get my VCR to record from a High definition converter box i.e after February 2009?
How do I get my VCR to record a show while hooked up to a High definition converter box? ?
I want to record shows on my VCR to 'time shift' how do I get my VCR to record shows through a high definition tv converter box.
As of right now the VCR will only record shows if the channel on the HD converter box is set to that channel and the converter box has not shut its self off.
I do NOT under ANY circumstances want to pay for TV!
Cable any any other type of pay for view is definitely out of the question.
I do not get payed enough nor do I have enough time to waste watching the idiot box to pay for it on a monthly basis. That is not to say there are not good shows on cable/satalite it is just that I am on a very limited budget with very limited resourses and paying for TV is out of the question.
There are television shows that I would like to see on public telivision ( the only semi intelligent TV worth watching) but are on at inconvenient times SO I record them on a VCR and watch them at my convenience.
NOW I will repeat the question,

I do not want to get cable or satellite, I want my VCR to record shows using the converter box.
Right now the box is off(not hooked up) until I solve this problem.
If your VCR has an IR blaster, then you can do it, otherwise the VCR can only record whatever channel your converter box is on.
There are IR blasters for PCs and most high-end PVRs (like Tivo) do have them, so maybe it is time to consider buying a new recorder with an IR blaster built-in.

I assume you have a coupon type converter box.
By default, all of these converters have a 4 hour shutoff timer. But all of them have a place to shut this (government mandated) feature off in the converter's menu. Shut the timer off to use with VCR.
If you want to program recordings on more than one channel, you need a converter model with a "VCR Timer". See the first link below for example.
Walmart does carry DVD/Hard drive recorders with digital tuners. These program like a VCR and do away with having to program the converter box and VCR separately.
This is the stupidest thing. My housemates have a 60 inch high-definition television with a great sound system, plus satellite tv reception and Tivo, yet they sit through tv commercials.. \ I don't get it.
why do they have TiVo if there not going to skip the commercials thats why i got my DVR
