My boyfriend has a playstation 3 with his LCD TV..
SO- I want to get him surround sound for this, but he doesnt want a new blu ray or DVD player because he only uses the playstation. Can I buy only speakers and connect to this??
Do I need an adapter for it?? What exactly would I need to buy for his present?
THANK YOU
No, you can not hook up speakers to a PS3. Home theaters can be a little tough to set up, but they're worth it. The good news here is the expensive part--the TV and PS3--are already taken care of.
In order to have a surround sound system you need to run the PS3 to a receiver (via HDMI) that is hooked up to the 5.1 speaker system. You will also run the hi-def cable to the receiver (via HDMI). Then you hook the receiver to the TV (via HDMI). So you definitely need a receiver and 5.1 speaker system. What you don't need is another Blu-Ray player because he already has the best.
So what receiver do you get? You need something with at least 2 "HDMI in" ports and at least 1 "HDMI out" ports. What you don't need to worry too much about is what kind of audio codecs the receiver decodes. The PS3 already handles all of that. So look for something from Onkyo, Yamaha, Sony, Denon, Harmon Kardon. I have an Onkyo TX-SR606 and it works great, though it may be more than you need.
For a speakers I highly recommend the Polk RM6750 5.1 speaker system. You can get it on newegg.com for $200. That's a steal. Whatever you do, don't buy anything by Bose.

Here's a list I created on amazon.com that details a relatively inexpensive way to set up a home theater system:

Let me know if you have any questions.
Could it be my receiver? Speakers have been fixed three times and each time worked for a few days and quit. Actually there was nothing involved in fixing them, it's almost like resetting the settings made them work again but that doesn't seem to work unless then have been off for weeks. I don't know how to approach solving this problem.
The Speakers cannot handle the Reciever's Power. That is a security feature of speakers these days of automatic shut off instead of blowing them out. Try to put the Treble and Bass switch in the middle.
Price: $149.95
Frequency response: 80-25KHz
Equipped with one 1-inch fabric dome tweeter
Pair of on-wall speakers for a 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 channel surround system
Equipped with one 4.5-inch polypropylene cone woofer
Super dense glass-filled ABS creates an acoustically inert cabinet, insuring an extremely clean and low coloration midrange response
So I have 3 audio inputs for the surround sound speakers, yet only have 1 jack in my mac book pro to put them. Is there an adapter I can purchase to solve this problem?
Thanks!
When I plug the black plug in I get the 2 back speakers, with green i get the 2 forward (left and right) and with pink I get subwoofer and center. so I need to find a way to combine these 3 inputs
By pink I meant orange sorry
No need, that is so that you can use the speakers on more than one device without having to plug them in and unplug them all the time.

I purchased a Surround Sound DVD Home Theater System and I get surround sound (From all 5 speakers) when I play a DVD or listen to the built in AM/Fm or play a CD but when I get the audio signal from my new HDTV I can only get the sound from the 3 front speakers. Nothing but a him comes from the 2 rear speakers. I have my TV set to external and on stereo and my Home theater system set to surround but nothing. Is there maybe something I am missing. I am new to surround sound. I know the speakers are hooked up and work as they work with the built in stuff its just with the external device (my HDTV) .
If anyone has a thought please share. Thank you.
Refer to your owner's manual. You should only have to adjust your receiver's surround sound settings for the fix. Make sure all of your speaker connections are secure and your low-level connections are in the multi-channel receiver terminals.

Buy Cheap Home Speakers
quot;home Cinemaquot; Advice - Manx Forums, Live Chat, Blogs amp; Classifieds ...
I just bought a cheap but highly rated surround amp (non HDMI) and centre speaker from this very forum, as I had two pairs of good Tannoys already. I only use it for sound, rather than picture switching, and it's not such a pain. I use the optical out from the Sky HD box - if yours doesn't have that, a pair of ordinary line outs to the amp would suffice. Mrbees takes care of these kind of things in our house. IIRC he bought a Yamaha thing and some speakers, which bust our minds, now he has swapped that for some Rotel pre/power amp things and some different (bigger, grr grr grr) speakers, that seems OK. Ha, I thought "Oh I can be really helpful" (but ofc I have no idea how any...
