I want a set of active stereo speakers for connecting to my PC and listening to music. I'm no audiophile but I know poor quality sound when I hear it.
I DO NOT want anything with a sub woofer. Nor do I want surround sound.
So with that in mind, should I get a pair of "low end" active monitors or a pair of "high end" PC speakers?
My budget is £75-£100 for the pair.
I realise that won't get me much of a monitor, but will it still be better than PC speakers?
If you could suggest some makes and models that would be greatly appreciated.
I have seen some sub £100 monitors. They tend to be small and lacking in low end - not studio grade by a long shot.
But would they beat standard "PC speakers"? I notice the trend with PC speakers is to get some tinny tweeters (the more the merrier - hence these 5.1, 7.1, 11.1 sets that keep cropping up) and pair them with an enormous sub woofer.
What you get is awful sounding music with tinny ear piercing highs backed by over the top muffled thumping bass. There is no mid range at all.
Maybe that's good for generation Y who don't even know what music is anymore but I want an honest representation of the frequencies in the music I listen to. As honest as I can get for £100 that is.
Unfortunately, £100 won't get you a pair of active monitors at all.
You are looking at around £500 minimum, just for something basic. Active monitors are not cheap.
You'll either have to out up with PC speakers, or save some more money, I'm afraid.
Please Rate :) Hello Everyone! Just a little video showing how to install passive crossovers in your current car stereo system, amps or, no amps ...
I know old-school cassettes can be harmed by speakers and magnets due to the fact that cassettes use a certain recording method. However, is it even possible for the things listed below to effect or damage a CD-R/CD+R or DVD-R/DVD+R disc? I ask simply because I have a few unused spindles of discs sitting about 1 foot away from a power outlet.
Will these harm a DVD-R or CD-R disc?
(1) magnetic fields
(2) stereo or PC speakers
(3) power outlet
(4) power cords
(5) sitting next to an active PC hard drive (external or internal HDD)
After all these years of protecting our 'magnetic media' the old habit is hard to break, eh!
No, CD's and DVD's are not magnetic media (they're optical media...relying on light, not magnetic properties to hold data).
That said, they can not be affected by magnets and electromagnetic field created by electrical wiring and power supplies.
I trust this clears things up for you...

I have an 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee with the Infinity 6 channel stereo. I was planning on going with an aftermarket headunit and swapping the door speakers with 6 x 9 2 way pioneers. My plan is this:
Using the internal amp in the new radio and bypassing the stock amp. RCA jacks running to the rear seat and butt splicing them into the existing speaker wires. I would also wire the 2 dash speakers in series by tapping into the front door speakers. This way I would have full range from all four speakers and have the 2 dash speakers still active. Is this a functional plan?
nah... as long as your getting a good headunit I would just by the wire harness and hook up the remote wire to the factory amp and they should power them that way.

As far as I can tell, there are computer speakers, which, passive or active, are fairly low-wattage (so they won't really fill a room with sound), and "good speakers", which do fill a room. The only audio input source I care about is my iPod, but it has a headphone/audio mini-jack. Computer speakers have mini-jacks, but "good speakers" have speaker wire inputs or another kind of jack. I gather the problem is that I need something to up the power (amplify it) between the iPod and the speakers.
What I'm trying to figure out is why the only option seems to be to buy a stereo receiver for hundreds of dollars. I don't need to receive AM/FM radio, I don't really care about all the glitzy graphic equalizer stuff, I just want something to take the output from my iPod and send it to speakers that will fill up the room.
What am I not understanding?
You can buy a speaker adapter at Wal-Mart. It's just a cheap little cord that connects your ipod to your speaker system.
i have read a few websites that say something about an active equalizer for these speakers, can i run them through a stereo receiver. i have an older technics receiver (400), will it run the two bose that i have
I am pretty sure the Bose 901s still have passive crossovers in the boxes, and the analogue EQ is used as a band-aid to make up for the problems with the 901s' normal frequency response. Personally, the Bose active EQ is nothing special. A decent graphic 1/3 octave EQ or parametric EQ will easily outclass the Bose in terms of functionality.

Klipsch Icon XF-48 Active Stereo Speakers
Klipsch Icon XF-48 Active Stereo Speakers
In the June 2008 issue of Sound & Vision, reviewer Daniel Kumin gives our slim, sexy-looking Icon X Series XF-48 floorstanders some serious praise ... and the publication's "Certified and Recommended" seal of approval.
“The Icons performed admirably with challenging, full-range material like The Song of the Nightingale, producing smooth but exciting big-hall sound with ample slam on big-bass attacks.” “Klipsch’s Icon XF-48 is an extremely able, extremely slim, extremely good-looking powered speaker. And it’s priced very fairly if you factor in the sums that would be otherwise spent on an external amp. Fans of serious sound who are unafraid to veer away from the passive-speaker herd—Icon-oclasts, if you will—should absolutely seek out the XF-48 for a listen.”
