Do cabinet speakers need to be placed in a position above the listener (such as on a shelf) ?
Radiohead

I know that I can just "listen and be able to tell" but I'm wondering if there is any technical audio design reason(s) why a cabinet speaker should not be placed on the floor, especially if it's a taller-than average speaker (not a cube speaker). Thanks!

The idea is actually very simple...You want the TWEETERS of the speakers at EAR level (of your listening position)...Very few people actually sit and listen to music these days so it doesn't matter...But for movies and what not, where you're planted on the couch, you'd want those tweeters at ear level.

are those good speakers? what size of a crowed could i DJ for. what power of amp would i need?
what does RMS mean?

thanks!

RMS means Root Mean Squared...or in laymen's term...the most wattage the speaker can handle continuously.

speaker is "good" enough for what you want to do and a pair should play loud for your average dancehall or ballroom...

Will my power amp be fine running so many speakers?
Boombot

Hey yahoo world! I have a question about ohms. Im in the process of building a PA system. My setup so far is 2 peavey pv215's (4 Ohms each)and 2 peavey pv118's (8 ohms each).I want to run them all into a Behringer EP2500 power amp. Will this work? Should I get another power amp? I would really like to make this work on one amp because im short of funds. If you have any suggestions on a better power amp that could handle all of this, let me know. I really dont want to spend over 500 on a power amp.

Thank you for any help!

well that amp says it can run at 2 ohms per channel.

so it would work. parallel wiring the 4 ohm speakers together will get you 2 ohms on 1 channel, and parallel wiring the 8 ohm speakers to the other channel will get you 4 ohms. so you should be fine.

Why are hornes used as tweeters in pro audio?
BEHRINGER Fan Photo - William O'connell

If in high fidelity home audio, the best speakers use ribbons or dome tweeters, why do pro audio speakers always made with horns? I understand that a horn will take more wattage, but wouldn’t multiple dome tweeters be able to take the power and produce better dispersion and fidelity if mounted in a cabinet properly?
can you give me the name of some manufacturers that use ribbons as high frequenct drivers in pro audio. I have not seen this yet.

My guess (and it is just a guess) is that it's probably a matter of cost and investment in old technology. I believe ribbon tweeters will become much more common in future large sound systems than at the present.

From Wikipedia:
Recently, high power versions of ribbon tweeters have started to appear in large scale sound reinforcement line array systems, that can cater for audiences of thousands. This is because the ribbon tweeter exhibits very particular directional properties. A typical ribbon tweeter will have very wide horizontal dispersion(coverage)and very tight vertical dispersion. These properties mean that the devices can be 'stacked' one on-top of the other making a high frequencey line array, that will project high sound pressure levels much further than conventional tweeters.

Home Audio Speakers: Improving Your Home Theater With Proper Speakers

Having the right speakers for your home theater room correct size, proper sound output, and fitting aesthetics brings the entire room together in one cohesive piece. When looking at new home speakers, consider the size of the room, the appropriate speaker size, the number of speakers that you are going to be using, and what is within your price range for sound equipment. You may also want to consider more aesthetic items like speaker placement and the overall look of your home theater design with speakers.

When it comes to finding home speakers, the first thing to do is analyze the size of the room. You want to take a good look at how much space you have, and then do some calculations about your speaker placement and number of speakers. For instance, if the room is very large, you are going to want to place your speakers much higher. If it is small, speakers on the floor will cut down on echoes and make it easier to align your entire sound system. In-wall speakers are another option that will allow you to have quality sound from all parts of the room without dealing with the potential clutter of floor standing speakers.
