Among them should be B&W, Harman Kardon/JBL, Polk Audio, Dynaudio. I am looking for a research study or other reliable source.
Unfortunatley Bose is the biggest, but they also spend a TON on advertising. It's actually funny that not many people have heard of real high end audio equipment manufacturers, including my friends and my family:except for my cousin because that's what he does - avaudiovision.com
I did read somewhere about who makes the most, or maybe it was who spent the most on advertising, or both, but I would agree with some of who you said. Maybe B&W would be second. I looked for it for a while before I am posting this but I can't find it. Here is a quote from an article "It is estimated that Bose has spent more dollars on advertising last year than ALL other high-end companies COMBINED" - http://www.intellexual.net/bose.html It's really bugging me that I can't find that page though. If I do happen to find it withing a couple days I'll post it.

trying to spend about 150 max on each set
Wow, you got some good answers...But Heres some more, Polk...go on ebay component sets, and 6x9's for $110 MAX!!!...
Or even DD audio high end components, and high end 6x9's, they are $100 max for both types, but very very nice speakers.
But like everybody said, Alpine, rockford, Infinity, jl,etc...are also all good speakers.
Hope I helped.

I have know a few brands like Mordan Short, JAMO, Polk audio, Cervin Vega, focal, Mantraz, Wharfedale. but I really don't know which is a better brand. I want to spend around 1000-1100 US$.
Can some one arrange the brands in order of preference
thanks steve... am looking for good sound for about 1000$ i dont care if it is bookshelf or sattelite speakers or any other type
I would look at Orb Audio, Definitive Technology,Morel Nova,RBH Sound, or Acoustic Research for a good quality and sound speaker packages.
The sound card stopped working when I installed SP2 on this machine. I attempted to re-install the drivers from the manufacturer's website to no avail. I'm half-thinking of reinstalling Windows to try to fix this, but I'd rather not given the choice.
It's a laptop with a Realtek AC97 compatible sound card. Drivers were retrieved from both the laptop manufacturer and the sound chip manufacturer. The occasional system beep comes from the speakers, but no audio playback works.
Any thoughts?
#1: This is a LAPTOP. I can't extract the sound card any more than I could extract your amigdala. (Without killing the system/you.)
#2: The file was an autoinstall which also duped the drivers in a separate folder. There was also also a driver program which continues to start up each reboot, but does nada. Sound manager doesn't do anything, either.
Buy a new card. Realtek is generic crap and will stop working on you. At least buy a cheap creative labs card at newegg.com

Creative Introduces Inspire S2 Wireless Speaker System | Gear Diary

Lets face it, wires are often inconvenient. They look bad, can be a pain and, at times, are more trouble then they are worth. Even still, at times it is nice to be able to connect your notebook or handheld device to external speakers with more punch and better sound.
That’s where Bluetooth comes in. As more and more mainstream devices adopt bluetooth technology the playing field for device accessories is changing. And one of the best uses of Bluetooth? Wireless speakers!
Wireless speakers are a great option with laptops and other bluetooth-enabled devices. They let you cut the cord without cutting the sound. Creative has a new offering in this area and they look good!
