Best Surround Sound Speakers System

if the surround sound speakers are hooked up to the TV, does the TV speakers actually work, or does the sound only come from the speakers of the surround system?

That depends if the problem is with the speakers or with the audio section of the TV or perhaps in the tuner. You should get a estimate to see if it can be fixed. A quick try of a surround sound system could not hurt, but it is not guaranteed to work.

what is the best way to connect my laptop to a speaker system,for example a surround sound speaker system for a home dvd system.

There should be a plug hole (port) on your laptop that has a green surround on it and shows a little speaker icon near it. This will be for a stereo mini jack plug. You will need to go to a reputable electronics store, like Maplins and buy a lead which has a mini jack plug at one end and twin phono plugs at the other end which should connect to your surround sound system. It may be an idea to take your laptop with you to the electronics store and the assistant should then be able to help you.

I have a Panasonic 42" Plasma (TH-42PX60U) and I just bought a Samsung Surround Sound System (HT-TX72), I was curious to know where should I place (in feet) the 2 front speakers as well as the 2 back speakers to make sure that I am getting the best sound. I have my couch set up about 8 feet away from the TV.
