Home Speakers Answers

Hi! I want to play music from my laptop on bookshelf speakers, what do I need to do ?

Surely not out of the headphone plug ? Is there some USB connector that I can use, or is there not enough power from my laptop to be of use for smallish speakers ?

Do I need to put it through an amp ?

Help.........

Connect your hifi / speakers through the headphone socket, its the best way, (you will probably need a headphone to AV lead)although there may be other ports depending on which laptop you have.

Best Speakers for music listening?

I am planning to buy a pair of stereo speakers for listening to music.
I would like to know which speaker is better for Acoustic and Alternative rock music, Floor-standing or bookshelf speakers with sub-woofer? I also need a good amplifier to power them, model and brand. Although musical taste is highly subjective, I would like to know a general consensus.

Bose (except for the 901) are overpriced, over hyped, cheaply manufactured......etc

Best Buy and Circuit City do not sell the "best speakers for music listening". They sell everything from junk to the nicest gear the average Joe is willing to spend on electronics. If you are serious about sound you are going to drop some serious cash in high-end shops and you're not going to buy what some yahoo on the intardnet tells you he thinks is the best. You're going to audition a lot of speakers and go with what your ears tell you is best.

What surround sound speakers are advisable for music and movie watching?

I’m looking to buy a surround sound system for my TV. I want to be able to play music with good quality, but also watch movies with a true surround sound experience. I was thinking about getting a sub woofer, a center channel speaker, and then 4 floor standing speakers for the left and right, front and rear positions. My question involves the 4 floor standers. Is it advisable to have floor standing speakers in the rear or would bookshelf speakers be better for the movie watching?

if you have room for the floor standing speakers sound better for music then the small satellite speaker even with a good sub. the small speaker do OK for TV viewing but for music they do not sound as good as a good full sized speaker. For the rears the large Speaker is not as important as the sound unless you are in 5 stereo is mostly coming from the front speakers the rears are just effects and fill sound so smaller is ok for the rears.

What are the best bookshelf speakers for under 1K?

I have a pair of Athena AS-B1.2 and they are phenomenal, they cost just over $100/pair. Flat response across the board, but lacking a bit in the bass department. Any recommendations on upgrades? I've heard the AV123 and Ascend brand speakers are unmatched. I'm driving this with a Zhaolu D/A and a Trends Audio low power amp, this will primarily be for music. Thanks!

i can't say what is the best but i will give you recommendations i have heard just about all of these speakers, i love speakers from Brittan and England they have a very neutral sound and flat frequency response, Which in my opinion is the best sound there is. but anyways here are some recommendations i have for you.

Bookshelf speakers vs floor standing speakers?

I want to buy speakers for my home music system. What is the difference between bookshelf speakers and floorstanding speakers?
What would I be better off with, with around 250$ to spend?
What has better sound?

Floor standing speakers generally provide a richer sound and have a wider frequency response. They can provide deep bass so at times, you may not even need a subwoofer. Bookshelf speakers on the other hand, usually require an additional sub because they cannot reproduce low-frequencies very well due to their small drivers.

The guy above me "Fisher" doesn't really know what he's talking about. In general, most floor standing speakers are NOT self-powered. Depending on the efficiency of the speaker, floor standing speakers usually require more power to operate properly, so you need a decent amp or receiver to drive them.

So to answer your question, I would go with floor-standers just because they have a wider frequency range and because I like big speakers :D

HOWEVER, with a $250 budget, you will not be able to purchase very good floor-standing speakers. You need to bump your budget up to AT LEAST $400 to get a decent pair of floor-standers.
