I have a PS3 hooked to a Sony STRDA5200ES receiver via HDMI, hooked to a 7.1 Focal speaker package. Every time I play cd's, mp3's or 2-channel audio sources on PS3 system, sound only plays thru the front two speakers and the sub. I really like the 2-channel to 7.1 audio conversion programs on the receiver, but it won't let me change any modes if it's coming from the PS3. My receiver will read (PCM 48K almost like an error).

I'm guessing the PS3 converts all sound to a multi channel out, but just limits it two the front two speakers if it's a 2-channel source. I can't find a way to turn that off. I'm very familiar with my receiver, and I know I can change the speaker modes on other sources easily (dvd,dvr,pc,wii, etc).

The PS3 does a nice job of pulling mp3s from my media servers and playback etc, I'm just not happy with only two speakers.

I have an Audio Art 340.6XE amp, a killer SQ (sound quality) amp. Runs about 70W per channel, and can be bumped even higher @ 14.4V and bridged.

My question is about speakers. I like to crank it LOUD, to the point of not being able to take it anymore, but short of ear bleeding.

I am looking at two levels of speakers. One level is the approx. $300 range for a set of mids and highs. Examples would be...

JL Audio C5 series
Focal 165KF K2 power series
Boston Pro 60 SE

The next level is the $500 and up range. Examples being

JL Audio ZR650 Series
Focal 165K2P K2 Power series
Boston Pro SPZ60 Series

The difference in these 2 levels is mostly material used for the cone, and wattage they can handle. The cheaper ones average about 70W RMS and the expensive ones average 150W RMS, which is double.

Assuming I want to turn the gain all the way up on the amp, will there be a noticable difference in SQ and SPL between the 2 levels, and is it really worth spending double if so?

You turn the gain all the way up you blow the amp... simple as that you can NEVER turn the gain all the way up the amp will clip and blow
And in car audio you get exactly what you pay for so you can assume they cost more because they are that much better...
Focal is the best out of those though....
If your going for straight sound quality then yes the upgrade is worth it...

Im_a_Beast!, in your answer you proved that your not fit to even answer this question the guy likes his high qualitysound and then you bring up hifonics amps and kicker L7s sounds like your friends car is just loud with no quality

are focal speakers worth the price? am currently sorting sounds for my car but working on a pretty tight budget. spend alot of time driving through work and want to spend cash on car audio. currently have alpine head unit,alpine rear door and alpine amp running mtx thunder sub. time to sort front speakers and have been advised to stretch to focal components, but top end products are pricey.Are they worth the extra mulla? also they will be running off a seperate alpine 250watt amp. no smart ass comments please.

I dont know much about focal, due to never having them recommended to me...but I would recommend sticking with alpine, they are currently leading the audio world in quality and popularity. I try to have 1 brand throughout my whole vehicle....it's just more reliable and you can get a better deal usually when you do that. If you just dont want to spend alpine prices...I recommend boston acoustics or pioneer, but always go 3 way or over. Stay away from rockford (going out of business).
