Home Speakers Answers

Could someone help me with a home audio question regarding subwoofers?

Ok, I'm an IT guy but I must admit...my knowledge of speakers isn't so great yet. But I am learning!

My question is, is there any subwoofers that I can connect two 200watt 8ohm speakers to bypassing a receiver?

The reason I ask is because I was going to purchase a full system but I'm tight on money now so I'm trying to figure out a way to add a subwoofer to what I already have and then add onto it later. Currently I have a very very old receiver than only has 4 speaker inputs and I'm not sure what the power rating is on it. I currently have two 200 watt JBL speakers hooked into it. It sounds good. But I want to add a sub some how. It needs bass.

My budget is around $400 right now and a receiver by itself is $400.
Any info/tips is appreciated.

well with 200 watt speakers, you should have some bass already unless you dont have a powerful enough reciever. i would go buy a sub that has inputs and outputs. this way power goes into the sub then some back out into the speakers.

Ha, at first when i purchased this i feared it might not be enough power only 50rms, i get more power from rubbing my feet on the carpet ha ha ...

If I bridge 2 4ohm subwoofers together, does it change it to 8ohms? 2ohms? Any change?

Hello,

I have two simple 20watt subwoofers that are both 4ohms each. These are home audio subwoofers that I pulled from a Creative Audio setup.

I have a receiver that says it only works with 6ohm and 8ohm speakers.

Is there any way to connect these two together to make them work with the receiver without blowing them?

YES YES YES.

Edit- But you can only use one channel ,either Left or Right but no way to use both channels. For subs it is not that important though. Most bass is the same for both channels.

Anyone that says you can't are wrong.
But remember the OHMS listing on your receiver is for IMPEDENCE not RESISTANCE
Connect them up in series.
Connect your + lead from your amp to the + on one speaker then connect the - of that speaker to the + on the other speaker. Then connect the - lead of the second speaker to the - on your amp.

Impedence OHMS is resistence to alternating current.
Speakers use alternating current.
Resistance OHMS is resistence to direct current.
Both are measured using OHMS but are different.
In all actuallity 8ohms impedence is about 6 ohms resistive.
But speakers do not use direct current. The only time a speaker will see direct current is when an amplifier clips. Direct current destroys speakers.
Now for all intensive purposes you can use the following. It is not rocket science.
If the impedence is the same for 2 speakers the impedence gets split in half if they are connected in parallel. The impedence doubles if they are connected in series.
If you start connecting more than 2 speakers together with varying impedences then it gets more tricky. But for your application you will be fine to connect them in series. That will give you 8 ohms impedence.
Parallel 8 and 8 = 4 ohm
4 and 4 = 2ohm
series 8 and 8 = 16 ohm
4 and 4 = 8 ohm

Need a good home audio that will be loud and good quality preferably a mini system not home theater?

I need to get a cd player that will be loud and also good quality but not a home theater preferably i am looking at one called a Sharp CD-G20000P it has 1000 watts and 8 ohms whatever that is with 10 % THD, it comes with Main Speakers – Two-Way Speakers, Satellite Speakers – Full Range Speaker System, 2 Separate Powered Subwoofers – 300W each. can someone please tell me if this is a good and loud stereo with good sound quality i dont know what about any of this means

Most speakers don't contain mid-range's so even loud they don't sound "right". The human ear hears mid range sounds the clearest.... which is why most systems turned up loud hurt our ears, or they start to sound bad before they get loud enough for our enjoyment. Especially during loud "get-togethers".

If you have the cash, B&O is the way to go. Mid range's in all their speakers. They are self-amplified, so you won't buy the extra equipment.... and their systems look like art. They are slim line and meant to be displayed. Either by hanging on the wall or sitting on a shelf.

Take a look: http://www.bang-olufsen.com/page.asp?id= 9
All of their Audio items have CD playback - except for the Beosound 3. It plays radio or MP3.

Also, about half of the stores offer a B&O card, kind of like a credit card but just for their store. Incase you don't have the cash on hand. Plus ALL their products come with a 3 year warranty. If anything goes wrong, they fix it for free or replace it!

Happy Shopping!!

Is there such a thing as 16 ohm subwoofers?

If so, where would you buy one online? Also, can you use car speakers on a home audio system if you get enclosures?

First off why are you looking for a 16 ohm subwoofer? If it has to do with the amp/receiver that you are hooking it up to most of these should be able to handle a larger load. As most home audio speakers are 8 ohm.

As far as using car speakers in a home audio application it is possible but there are a couple of things that you may want to consider. First the accoustics in a car are far different from in your home and they may not perform quite the same. Also most car audio speakers are 4 ohm unless you are talking about subwoofers then they have dual loads that can be configured in many different ways.

Interesting FAQ about subwoofers or speakers/distotion/clipping and wattage etc...?

SPEAKER FAQs and ABC's...
This page will provide information about speakers and answers to FAQs. It is not particularly well organized at this time. The information presented refers to professional type speakers that DJ's typically use (although much of the info applies to home and car speakers as well). Hopefully it will be useful and will help clear up some mysteries and misconconceptoins.Speakers are highly complicated electromechanical devices. The primary purpose of a speaker is to convert the electrical energy from an amplifier to sound (acoustic) energy. Speakers currently represent the weakest technological link in an audio system. Although many speakers of today are very good or even outstanding, there remains considerable room for improvement (compared to other audio equipment).
Wattage Ratings
Often, consumers are attracted to and impressed by speakers that can handle the largest amount of watt........http://www.rocketroberts.com/techart/spk r.htm

Thanks sparky.I try to do my homework BEFORE giving advice.Like I said,Ive been out of the car audio scenario awhile and really not to much has changed except higher wattage amps and certain audio brands arent like they used to be.In some cases, quality has gone down tremendously...but in others, there have been improvements. Now that is what Im trying to learn.Which products new are good and which products that have been around are still good.

Excellent find.

I must insist on others to read the article for a better understanding of what really goes on.

Cudos to you and five stars *****.
