How do I mount my surround sound speakers to the wall?
WS651

Our basement was recently refinished and I bought the Sony Surround Sound Speakers (Model SW576). The walls are already wired for surround sound with the speaker cables in a plate coming out of the wall at the rear and front of the room. Do I need to buy brackets to hold the speakers in place, how much are they, and if I do need to buy brackets, what do I do with the wall plate that has the speaker wire coming out of them. Also, if you can suggest a reasonable price and place to buy them, that would be awesome too. Thanks in advance.

If your speakers aren't too heavy, http://www.monoprice.com has some very reasonably priced brackets. I've used them in my own theater.

As far as the wall plates. what I did was mount the brackets as close to the wall plates as I could, so the speakers would hide most of the plate. You could also try painting the plate the same color as the wall. Do not try mounting the brackets to the plates, as they (the plates) will very likely break.

How can we mount surround sound speakers on the wall?
WS650

My husband bought surround sound speakers for our tv, and there doesn't seem to be a way to mount them. Right now they are ON our wall, and the cords are on the wall too... it just looks bad. How can I fix this?

We were thinking of putting shelves on the wall, and having the speakers rest on them. However that doesn't solve the problem with the ugly cords.

Here is a picture:

Look rear of speakers what type of hooking system they have, you can use wall mount brackets or simply drill the drywall, plastic expansion and a screw ( very simple) .
To solve the wires problem:
Pick the final location of speakers, same distance and symmetric, depending on width of wire, draw two lines along the wires should run(pencil) with a very sharp handy man knife cut the drywall and with a flat screw driver make like a canal along the wall.Insert cables and cover with drywall paste, let dry, sand paper, and paint again.
Look my back surround, I did it that way, takes some little work but all wires are concealed, except the wires that run trough the wall corners which are painted.

Hope this helps.

What are the best surround sound in wall speakers.?
WS804

I have a house I want to put an in the ceiling surround sound system in, they have to mount flush and everyhting is prewired, besided Bose what are some better brands?

There are many good in wall speakers. Paradigm is a good speaker for the price. Stay away from the mass market brands (pioneer, sony, etc) if you want real quality. Klipsch, definitive technology, schnell, M & K are all very good as well. I suggest you visit as many audio/home theater stores to listen for yourself. Everyone has their own preference.

I have an existing surround sound but wanted to add a few in wall speakers to it.?
WS804

I was wondering how do i add the in wall speakers to my existing surround sound? Do I have to run wires to the receiver or how can I set it up easily? Just wondering? I would like to add a few on the wall and a few on the ceiling.

If you want to add additional speakers you'll have to get a speaker switch box to accommodate all the speakers you want to hook up without overloading your receiver. Yes you'll have to run wires to the speaker from your receiver. Hiding the wires might be more trouble for you if you don't know how.

when installing a surround sound system with in wall speakers do i need special wires?
WS804

i had this sale guy tell me that i need heavy duty special wires just because the wiring is inside the walls? that does not make sense to me. can u help me?

16 or 14 guage does infact refer to the thickness of the wire. The more power (watts) you are delivering through the speakers the heavier guage wire you want to use. (14g is thicker than 16g). The 2 in 16/2 or 14/2 refers to the number of conductors that are inside the plastic jacket. So 16/2 is 2 wires of 16 guage in the jacket.

I have been running speaker wire for various uses for 15 years this is my advice. Yes, quality of wire matters; to those who can hear the difference. If you are someone who listens to their system a lot, you will hear a difference. If you are a casual listener then you may not hear the difference. I can hear the difference.

I personally choose Monster brand wire for home theatres. If you don't want to spend the money look into "belden" wire or "genesis" wire. These are lesser brands that I like. For the love of Pete, DO NOT BUY RADIO SHACK WIRE!! Or really anything Radio Shack branded, consider yourself warned.

In regards to guage selection. I have found that 16g is ok for runs of less than 50' and are carrying 100W or so of power. (Your average theatre with the typical receiver/amplifier)

If you are going to use more power 150W+ I would recommend 14g wire.

  • RBH Introduces a Unique In-wall Surround Speaker

RBH Sound just introduced a new addition to their award-winning Signature Series In-wall speaker lineup. RBH Sound has many proven monopole in-wall models within their Signature Series which can be used for surround channels, but the SI 744 is the company's first dedicated multi-pole in-wall surround channel for the series. The SI 744 employs four proprietary 4-inch high performance metal cone woofers and two 1-inch silk dome tweeters for excellent performance and crystal clear sonic accuracy. True to RBH Sound tradition, the SI 744 is timbre-matched to the rest of the Signature Series In-wall and freestanding speakers.

The SI 744's design places two of the woofers and one tweeter on a 45-degree angle towards the screen, while the other two woofers and tweeter point on a 45-degree angle towards the rear of the theater. This 90-degree angle opposing design, combined with the SI 744's dual- or single-channel wiring capability, presents a unique surround sound solution. When integrated into the rear sides of a home theater system and wired in dual channel mode, the SI 744's front-firing drivers can play side surround channel audio and the rear-firing drivers can play rear surround channel audio. This configuration provides all four surround channels in a 7.1-channel surround sound system from one pair of SI 744s. In other words, RBH Sound dealers now have the unique ability to offer their clients four channels of surround sound when their room's design prevents another set of rear speakers from being integrated into the surround system. When wired in single-channel mode, the SI 744 presents its listeners with a bi-polar dispersed sound field for increased surround coverage.
