I'm a little confused--are you asking about a amplifier/ receiver or a CD player? If receiver, I use a Onkyo 674 to drive my four JBL in-wall speakers and it sounds awesome.

Your system won't mean squat without a well designed box to put your subs in. Some manufacturers have recommendations as to dimensions of various types of boxes. It is best to find someone who builds boxes if you go with something other than a sealed box.

You should always match up RMS (Root Mean Square) watts of Subs and amp per channel as well as impedance's(resistances).

If your amp is rated at 4Ω don't subject it to 2Ω, it will fry.

Here is the formula for subs in parallel:

Z = 1 / (1/sub1 + 1/sub2 + 1/sub3 + ....)

For series, just add them up (sub1 + sub2 + ...).

You can mix and match these equations to get the right impedance required by your amp.

Example: 4 subs @ 4Ω each. If I connect two in parallel and the other two in parallel and tie the two pairs in series, I would have a total impedance(resistance) of 4Ω. So to the amp, it's just one sub.

You should use a capacitor as well.

Recommend for every 500 watts MAX you use a .5 Farad cap
Example: 1000 watts MAX - 1 Farad cap

You will also need what's called a "line level converter" if your stock head unit doesn't have RCA outputs or your amp doesn't have high-level inputs.

Clarion head unit stopped worhing so replaced with Goodmans stereo, car has factory fitted amp and speakers, now have hiss from dash board speakers and rear parcel shelf speakers, removed the amp fuse and lost all sound so had to put it back, how can I stop the hiss?

it sound to me like you may have a ground problem if you changed the deck check and make sure it has a good ground
also you may need to add a ground to the amp.

My father has a stereo system with 4 jbl le15a speakers and 4 passives. they are massive speakers with a 15 pound magnet. are there any home system speakers with a bigger magnet? that are better? louder?

Well the magnet size is not the important factor in sound quality. JBL LE 15A are not made anymore and it is a driver. Sounding better comes down to preference really. Most speakers can provide large rock sound for home use.

this car stereo place is pushing a 100 watt 4 channel amp and 4 6.5" speakers ---all JBL--on me cause he says all the Alpine gear he normally has is all gone. 600 installed he wants.

600 to install or 600 for the speakers and the install. sounds a bit high to me for components. your car might not have 6 and a halfs in the front and back. like the front might be 5 1/2 and the back is usually 6 1/2.

to answer your question though yes, alpine is more quality than jbl.

the guy is correct, its too expensive. how much is he charging you for the amp, speakers and install. an install like that, not doing a head unit, not doing subwoofers isnt going to be more than $100-200 labor. Anyone who charges more than that is not being competitive.
