i have a pioneer receiver connected with two floorstanding jbl speakers and two jbl surround speakes but they dont sound loud enough. i already put the rear volume higher but they still dont sound good. is it because the front speakers are bigger and louder thanks.
I am not sure what you mean "loud enough".
Perhaps your receiver is underpowered.
Perhaps your speakers are underpowered
Perhaps the source does not provide any sound material to the back speakers (they don't work ALL the time, only for special effects)
Try your speakers in a a virtual surround mode - with a stereo source. Then the surround speakers are always on.

Im using my old 100w Onkyo main speakers as surround sound speakers with my new receiver. The problem is they're a little bulky. I need to buy 2 separate surround sound speakers that are small without losing the sound quality. My main speakers are JBL e80 series. Where should I start?
e80's? Very nice. If your happy with the bass, mid and treble the mains put out then a modest pair of bookshelf size speakers should fill the bill nicely.
.
A lot depends on placement and room acoustics. I prefer ported speakers for home theater and acoustic suspension for listening to music. Either way, what you get should be accurate in the mid to high frequencies and have sharp (ported) rather than smooth response (acoustic suspension).
I would suggest a Polk 'R' series small speaker for smooth mids and trebles or a klipsch ksb if you like that crystal clear (sometimes harsh) horn sound.
Be sure and get a dealer agreement for a test drive. Try them out in different configurations and placements and if they blend well with your main's, you're good to go. If not, take them back, ask questions and try again.
.
Personally I wouldn't spend more that a hundred on a pair of surrounds. All you really need are good, strong mids and highs and you don't need to spend a fortune for that.
My setup.
Yamaha HTR 5140
Vintage Advent 5002's mains
Polk monitor 4's rears.
Although I've got a Klipsch RC3 center,
I just use my TV's built in speakers as center.
Sounds great once balanced with system.
No sub needed with the Advents.

Which set of speakers are better: the JBL CS6100 or the Harman Kardon HKTS 18? Which would be a better choice for a medium sized living room?... Which is a more reliable brand? please elaborate
10 points for best answer
I like the Harmon Kardon better, but the Klipsch or Boston Acoustics brand seem to have a better response overall....

Hello,
I was going to purchase a JBL surround sound speaker system but unfortunatly the system that I had in mind went up in price 2 1/2 fold over night. Now I've decided to keep my 2 front tower speakers and just add a center and 2 surround rear speakers. I'm running DCM TF600 in the front. I was thinking of purchasing the JBL Venue Series Voice center channel for $100.00
However, I don't know what rear speakers to purchase that will be of quality and also won't cost more than $150.00 for a pair.
If anyone knows from personal experience which rear speakers to purchase, please let me know. Your suggestions will be welcomed.
Thank you.....
The system I'm trying to build is 5.1 Channel...
Im assuming you are building a 5.1 system. Either way 5.1 or 7.1 the surrounds don't get used that much so you don't need anything spectacular as far as surround speakers. Many companies make decent surrounds. However to get just 2 of them im not sure. Try ebay. Now for the front. You should seriously consider a bigger better front speaker. The jbl is a decent one but if you have towers for f/l and f/r they will overpower it. There is a store on ebay Harman audio. they sell refurbished jbl, infinity and harman stuff. It comes with the warranty and all just like new. I bought a $500 pair of jbls from them for $150 and they are awesome!! They usually have some lc1s and lc2s which are jbl's studio series center speakers and they will keep up with your towers from what i've seen they go for $100-$200 and are twice the speaker the venue series are. But remember the surrounds are far less important than your center so if you need to save money save it on them!!
I have an Onkyo 7.1 Receiver and a JBL surround sound system that is giving me a horrible hum, especially through the self powered sub. I have a HD DVR Cable Box connected by HDMI Cable to the receiver, and then video goes from the receiver also by HDMI cable to a TV projector............. At first I thought it was the projector's cooling fan or after reading some feedback because I have the projector on one outlet and the receiver & cable on another, but it still hums when the projector is off …............ I think the problem is the Cablebox because when I am changing channels, or I mute the cable, no hum, possibly the DVR disc nature, but it is brand new?.................... The system is in my basement, and the sub sits on a tile floor, could that be it? The surround speakers still hum when that is off though, but not as bad. .................. What else could I trouble shoot, or what can I do to cut this out?
Hums are difficult to troubleshoot in person let alone over Yahoo answers.
Cable boxes are often the culprit because the cable coming off the street is often at a different ground potential than your home.
If you disconnect the cable, does the home go away?
If so, there is something called a isolation transformer. Here is a cheap one you can make:
