Why does my surround sound speakers only give background noise when sound is about to start?
Klipsch RF-10

I have 5:1 surround Klipsch speakers hooked up to my computer via an optical cable, and I can't figure out why the sound is only giving off background noise when a sound is about to happen. (Usually it cuts off the first second of it too). Then the speakers shut off automatically until a new sound is about to be played.

tough question, I guess I would need to know what type of video card you have, what system your using, what amp your using and if it works with the digital cable on another source? Sounds like to me something is hooked up wrong/ the computer using the digital out? Is the amp have the selection of say all channel or turn surround off. Try if you can to try the optical on another source and if it works you know its with the computer.

Blu Ray sound format, whats the difference between Dolby Tru HD or DTS-ES?

I noticed that all blu ray discs have different sound formats. I have a thx reciever and 5.1 surround sound klipsch reference speakers. I want the best sound quality so which format do i look for in the discs? There are so many formats like Dolby Tru HD or DTS-ES. But are they all the same in sound. Please reccomend which format to look for, to get best perfomance of my speakers. Thanks

DTS-ES is not a HD sound format, it is a 6.1 channel surround sound. DTS-HD MA is better than Dolby True HD in my opinon. A THX receiver doesn't mean it supports HD sound formats unless it supports audio via HDMI or your stand alone Blu-ray player has 7.1 analog channel outputs. It is hard to find a Blu-ray movies with both DTS-HD MA and Dolby True HD.

How many speakers do I need to enjoy 7.1 surround sound from my blu-ray movies?

I'm looking at purchasing a Onkyo TX-SR805 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver and a set of Klipsch Quintet SL Home Theater System (5 speakers) along with a subwoofer (also Klipsch). Is that enough speakers or do I need to add two more???

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks...

First before you buy a speaker system check out reviews from Cnet and audioholics. I wouldn't recommend a Klipsch system unless you gotta get past the WAF. I think there are much better systems in that price range and it has no subwoofers!

Second a good 7.1 system needs 7 speakers and 2 subwoofers. Some people will tell you one is good enough, but if your going 7.1 you probably need 2. Your setup will depend on your rooms configuration.

What speakers do I need for the best 7.1 sound?

I recently purchased an INTEGRA DTR 6.9 receiver. This receiver is capable of 7.1 sound and bi-amping. My question is, which would be the best speakers to match what I have, and how/where should I place them? I have large rectangular room. My current set up consists of two Klipsch front floorstanding speakers. My center is a POLK CS400. My sub is an old SONY 10". My surround rears are BOSE 301's. For now I have a JVC center and a CERWIN VEGA center set up as my left and right surrounds.

Should I keep the centers where they are, or should I purchase some new surrounds?
Should I replace the Bose 301's rears with a surround sound speaker?
Thanks.

Sounds like you've got allot going on...Different types, brands and qualities of speakers can lead to a very confusing rig...The ideal setup in any home theatre would be to have all speakers match...

Bose speakers were designed before surround sound existed...That's the principle behind their "direct/reflecting" theory...It creates the illusion of surround from only two speakers...And thus aren't the best choice for true surround...

When you shop for new speakers...NEVER LISTEN TO OPINIONS...JUST LISTEN TO THE SPEAKERS!..Follow this and everything else falls into place...Listen to personal CDs and listen carefully to each possible selection...Hearing your favorite songs on different models will help you decide...

Like most people will say, the choice is subjective...What sounds good to you, may not to me and vice versa...Some popular high-end brands are:

B&W - http://www.bwspeakers.com/
Vandersteen - http://www.vandersteen.com/
Legacy Audio - http://www.legacy-audio.com/

These manufacturers offer much higher end items than what we find at our local home theater store...They also have extensive lines for those who want bookshelfs over floor-standing models...

There are also speciality speakers like electrostats...Electrostats (planars) are LARGE polarized plates that use capacitance to make sound waves...Brands like Magnepan and Martin-Logan have been around for ages...

http://www.magnepan.com
http://www.martinlogan.com

Don't be afraid to also try listening to some recording studio grade speakers...The local music stores (Guitar Center or Sam Ash) usually have a good selection and may even be better quality than what you find at Best Buy...Popular studio monitors are Genelic, ADAM and KRK...

http://www.genelec.com
http://www.adam-audio.com
http://www.krksys.com

I have a set of Focal's (also called JM Labs) and a set of ProAc's...I'd not part with either one..After what seems like the same battle you're fighting, I decided to go with 5 identical speakers for the system...This creates a uniform sound for movies and surround music...Also gives me floorspace back form the large Electrostats I used to have...They sound great...

http://www.focal.tm.fr

Ideally, the speakers should be positioned so that each is the same distance from you (the listener)...Picture this: if you were sitting in the middle of a clock, the center channel sould be at 12:00, the left and right would be at 10:00 and 02:00, and the surrounds should be at about 8:30 and 4:30...

Let me know how you make out...

  • Comparison of Klipsch HT300 with Energy Take Classic - High Def ...

With speakers of that size, you are not going to have much if any low (bass) at all. The "mid-bass" drivers are only 2.5'' (they are mids, not woofers). That is what the sub is for, to drive home that thumping base and rattle the windows. The only Energy set I checked out was the Take 5's and they had 3.5'' mids. Is that what Costco is selling? If so, the speakers are a bit bigger and will probably produce a bit more robust mid base, but not a ton. But since you have already tested the Klipsch, only one way to find out. Grab those Take 5's and give the a run. Then simply return the looser. Not sure where you got the HT300's, but Costco has an excellent return policy.
