Music Speakers Stands

I am planning to buy a pair of stereo speakers for listening to music.
I would like to know which speaker is better for Acoustic and Alternative rock music, Floor-standing or bookshelf speakers with sub-woofer? I also need a good amplifier to power them, model and brand. Although musical taste is highly subjective, I would like to know a general consensus.

Bose (except for the 901) are overpriced, over hyped, cheaply manufactured......etc

Best Buy and Circuit City do not sell the "best speakers for music listening". They sell everything from junk to the nicest gear the average Joe is willing to spend on electronics. If you are serious about sound you are going to drop some serious cash in high-end shops and you're not going to buy what some yahoo on the intardnet tells you he thinks is the best. You're going to audition a lot of speakers and go with what your ears tell you is best.

how to fill loudspeaker stands for improved sound quality

I’m looking to buy a surround sound system for my TV. I want to be able to play music with good quality, but also watch movies with a true surround sound experience. I was thinking about getting a sub woofer, a center channel speaker, and then 4 floor standing speakers for the left and right, front and rear positions. My question involves the 4 floor standers. Is it advisable to have floor standing speakers in the rear or would bookshelf speakers be better for the movie watching?

if you have room for the floor standing speakers sound better for music then the small satellite speaker even with a good sub. the small speaker do OK for TV viewing but for music they do not sound as good as a good full sized speaker. For the rears the large Speaker is not as important as the sound unless you are in 5 stereo is mostly coming from the front speakers the rears are just effects and fill sound so smaller is ok for the rears.

What is the best one for this? I don't talk on the phone a lot, but do text a lot. My brother in law had a phone on thanksgiving that stood up and played music through speakers, (so we could hear it, not thru headphone jacks only) It was pretty cool, but I don't know what that was and I want to get out early for Black Friday deals

I am a person who changes my cell phone every 3-6 months. My favorite so far is the Voyager by Verizon. Not sure what service provider you are looking at. But I talk on my phone for maybe 100 or so minutes a month, but use well over 1000 text messages a month. It is one sounds like what you saw, speakers on the side and flips open toa keyboard.

The camera on the phone is a 2.0 but it has a two step focus, whereas my blackberry phone is a 2.0 mega pixel, but it doesn't focus as well.

I was at Lollapalooza like 10 hours ago, but my right ear is still ringing from standing next to the speakers (which were on my right). Is this permenant ear damage? Is there anything I should do?

It depends on how close you were standing to the speakers and for how long, how big they were and the amount of pressure and volume coming from them. You have hairs in your ears which flex and bend according to the sounds/frequencies you here. If you subject them to much loud music these hairs are forced flat and don't come up again. This results in certain frequencies not being filtered by your ear manifesting in a ringing in your ears. The frequency of this ringing will differ depending on which hairs in your ears were damaged. If it continues for a long period of time consult a doctor. You may have a form of tinnitus.

I want to prevent my neighbour below me from hearing the bass/noise from my hi-fi speakers. I currently have them on a table. Are there any cheap and effect ways to stop him hearing the vibrations?

I was thinking of putting the speakers on a polystyrene slab or mounting them on a stand... would any of these work? Any other suggestions.



Help help please!

The first thing to do is turn the bass down. You can then damp out the speakers vibration a bit by putting them on some form of resilient mat (a slab of medium density closed cell foam, for example), but the problem is that bass notes cause the walls and floor to vibrate and the sound will still be transmitted.

The way the ear hears is part of the problem. The ear responds logarithmetically, which means in essence that a small decrease in loudness requires a large decrease in power ... meaning that damping must be VERY effective (probably 100-500 fold decrease) to cut the perceived sound appreciably.

Unfortunately you would have to soundproof the whole room (or at least the floor) to address the problem. That means you need to not only damp out the speaker, but -- at a minimum -- put a thick carpet and underlay on the whole floor as well. Anything else simply won't work. And depending on the sensitivity of your neighbour s/he will still hear bass!
