What surround sound speakers are advisable for music and movie watching?
SpekrFrek

I’m looking to buy a surround sound system for my TV. I want to be able to play music with good quality, but also watch movies with a true surround sound experience. I was thinking about getting a sub woofer, a center channel speaker, and then 4 floor standing speakers for the left and right, front and rear positions. My question involves the 4 floor standers. Is it advisable to have floor standing speakers in the rear or would bookshelf speakers be better for the movie watching?

if you have room for the floor standing speakers sound better for music then the small satellite speaker even with a good sub. the small speaker do OK for TV viewing but for music they do not sound as good as a good full sized speaker. For the rears the large Speaker is not as important as the sound unless you are in 5 stereo is mostly coming from the front speakers the rears are just effects and fill sound so smaller is ok for the rears.

How to play stereo music on a PC with Windows Vista, Creative Labs SB Live! 24-bit and 5.1 surround speakers?
Reno Tahoe Tonight - Ad

I have a new computer with two soundcards. One is High-definition Audio integrated on the ASUS motherboard and the second is Creative Labs SoundBlaster Live! 24-bit PCI card. I use the SoundBlaster for a digitial audio input from my set-top box which allows me to hear audio from my TV, e.g. hear music broadcasted on MTV Hits channel. However, the music does not play on all of my speakers, it only plays stereo (left and right speaker, but no center, no subwoofer, no surround speakers). Music that is not played through the subwoofers lacks very much. Also all of my MP3 music is stereo only and Windows Media Player of Winamp play it on left & right speakers only. I have installed the latest driver from Creative Labs and I see I have Audio Console in my Control Panel. I switched the CMSS 3D on, but the music still does not get through the subwoofer. How do I enable bass redirection in Windows Vista for my SoundBlaster?

I may be wrong in this but I believe the SB Live is not fully supported in Vista. If I were you, I would just grab a newer and better card that will do what you want with much better sound. Get an X-Fi.

Otherwise, I would visit Creative Labs forums and ask around there about the Live card and Vista surround sound support.

Is there a way to play music with my surround sound using all speakers?
new home theatre

So I bought a surround sound stereo for my tv and also for music. When I try to play music through it it only comes through 2 speakers and the sub. I'm guessing this is because the cd isn't meant to be played on surround sound? Or maybe theres a setting on the player that will just let it use all speakers at once? Is there any way I can get it to play through all speakers?

Most surround systems have special DSP modes that allow you to play stereo input through all speakers.

Try Pro Logic
Prologic II
Virtual surround etc. Just go through all DSP modes until you can hear from all speakers (or read the manual for help).

Can a surround sound receiver be made to work with just 2 speakers for music only?
PolK E series

I've got a surround sound receiver that I just want to hook up with a couple old cabinets for some music in the garage. Can't seem to get good sound out of it no matter which speakers outputs I use. Can I use this like a plain old receiver?

You should hook up the speakers two the two main front speakers (L and R). You should get good sound, so if it isn't good, I would suspect the speakers not the receiver.

5.1 surround sound rear speakers not playing music?
Sound Eggs - Isoloated Surround Sound

i have a logitech 5.1 surround sound system. when i play music on my computer every speaker plays except for my 2 rear speakers. why is this so?

Why do you want music in 5.1? That is just really funny to me. Music in 5.1 is absolutely annoying because music is supposed to be in stereo. Even if you do manage to make all five speakers work it will just sound really weird (I've tried it). Unless you are watching movies (in which case have fun with 5.1 or 7.1) than try sticking to stereo. There is a reason music has not upgraded to a standard of 5.1...because stereo works perfectly for music. In the end I just want to point out to you that your music should not be in 5.1 and unless you have the appropriate sound card I wouldn't even bother messing around with 5.1 and a computer.
