I have a few old speakers from a surround DVD system that I would like to hookup to the computer, how can this be accomplished? I do not have the RCA jacks on the computer that some of the speakers have, I would like more speakers for my computer and these are just sitting around collecting dust!
You need power to drive bigger speakers. Get an older stereo receiver and plug the speakers into it. Then just connect to the PC from the headphone jack of the stereo to the speaker jack of the PC. You'll need a male-male mini RCA jack on one end and a regular size jack for the stereo on the other. 5 bucks at Radio Shack.
You can find an old stereo at a garage sale or ebay for cheap.
This is my configuration on our big screen theater setup.
Here#39;s a mid #39;70s looking Zenith 8 track/AM/FM receiver, with it#39;s matching Zenith Allegro 1000 speakers. This stereo sounds ...
The male connector of the speakers are just loose wires that I would clip into the stereo. Is there an adapter I can buy? Where could I find one?
ladies and gentleman! PLEASE list the maker and model of the electronic items you have questions about! YES its possible to do that...but without telling us even what the stereo's manufacturer and the model number ( example: Sony STRDE197 hint: sometimes the model number can be found on the bottom or back of the unit if its not on the front) it is close to impossible to give you a "BEST" answer.
I really wish Y! Answers would put this time of NOTE! in the header of every page when you go to ask a question here. most likely.. you need an adapter like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Audio-Cable -Splitter-1-Mini/dp/B00004Z5CP/ref=pd_cp _e_3
but theres no sure way to say since i dont have a clue what kinda of stereo out of the thousands on the market you're talking about!

I jus bought an 1993 Toyota Camry. I want 2 get a new stereo for it. The thing is will the new stereo make the old speakers sound good?
it will likely make them sound "better"... but maybe not "good" and certainly i would not think any worse, but even that i am not for sure, many times the stock audio is matched to one another, with eq curves built-in to give a better overall sound, ect... typically i would recomend new speakers for better sound, and a new deck for added features. you could always try the factory speakers and see what you think, and replace them later if you decide, no harm in that.

Hi,
I think I follow your line of thinking and let me assure you, there's a much better way.
As I understand your question, you want to attach your old stereo speakers directly to your desktop computer to amplify the sound.
The issue with your logic is simply that your stereo speakers aren't powered (read: they don't have an ac adapter) and therefore require an intermediary, a powered amplifier, to generate sound.
Perhaps, as you suggest, there's a sound card out there that powers stereo speakers. But why shell out cash for something you already have in your possession?
Use the stereo speakers along with the old stereo system. It has all the components you need to not only blow your eardrums while playing computer games, but also to give you the ability to make mp3s out of old cassette tapes for your iPod Nano (that you can now afford due to the fact that you're not shelling out cash for an eclectic and possibly non existent sound card). And if there's a radio show (like Led Zeppelin weekend) you can make mp3s out of that too.
All this for under ten dollars (CAN/US). Just purchase yourself two sets of shielded Y connectors, each with a 3.5mm (1/8") STEREO mini plug on one end and two standard RCA phono plugs on the other end. Don't buy MONO, get STEREO.
1. Connect the mini plug of the Y-Connector to your sound card's LINE OUT which if color coded will be the GREEN one.
2. After the sound card Line Out connection is made, connect the two RCA plugs at the other end of the Y-Adapter to a right and left LINE INPUT at the back of your receiver/amp. This could be a CD/AUX, TUNER, or TAPE IN jack. Plug the red connector into the right channel input and the white or black connector into the left channel input. If your cable has black and white plugs, use the black for RIGHT and the white for LEFT.
3. Connect the two RCA plugs of your second Y-Adapter to a right and left LINE OUTPUT at the back of your receiver or integrated amp.
4. Next, connect the mini plug end of the cable to the LINE IN at the back of your sound card.
5. Enjoy.

You have two problems, but not the wire.
First problem: you must use an amplifier or old am/fm reciever to amplify the speakers. Almost any cheap stereo in a pawn shop will do it, as long as it has a tape monitor input.
Second problem: you will get hum in your system from ground loop differences with the computer. That has driven people crazy for years.
The good news: One company has finally solved the problem completely. They developed an impedence matching ground loop isolating interface, it's only $30. You simply plug it to the computer, and the stereo, like a cable.

When you get your system hooked up, you will love it.

Just another mediocre phone in a long line of gimmick phones. These phones proudly include:
Upstage (mentioned by matt)
Decoy (BT headset as part of phone, horrible battery life for headset)
Juke (small twist formfactor that looked kind of like those weird Nokia "gumpack" phones)
Flipshot (swivel screen, bad camera)
A couple people will buy this phone, love it at first, and be bored with it within a month, and disgusted within two. Then they'll have to tough it out for another two years.
