surround sound speakers, cerwin vega, sony, or polk audio?

i am building a 7.1 system, i have a sony 60 inch hdtv, sony str-de997 receiver

Of the 3 I'd avoid Sony (and most Japanese speaker manufacturers .. although some Onkyo and Yamaha are good for the money). Canadian, US, British and Scandinavian brands are generally the best bets. Cerwin Vega had a good name, but Polk are more "today".

That said, I wouldn't put any of these at the top of my list. There are lot's of others including Klipsch, Distinctive Audio, Totem, Boston, Mirage, Infinity, PSB, Paradigm, ....

For a professional recommendation of top surround sound speakers see the link. That said, I'm not sure whare you are so you may wish to buy a locally supported brand.

Finally, 7.1 is nice, but I personally wouldn't limit myself to 7.1 speaker packages. It's just as good, cheaper, and less limiting to plan to add 2 inexpensive rear speakers to a good 5.1 setup.

Happy hunting.

Speakers - 'Home Theatre' - Would Towers work / be cool as 'Surround' Speakers ?

Typically Home Theatre set ups have one tower speaker on either side of the TV, center channel in the middle, a sub, and two (or more) much smaller 'surround' speakers in the back.

Putting aside what you might think about speaker placement or whether a sub is necessary etc, the question is:

Is there any reason to NOT use towers as 'surround' speakers also ?

I have Polk Audio surround speakers now and they are fine and dandy and make cools sounds, etc.

But the towers Rock. I know that the signal that goes to the front speakers is different than the one going to the 'surround' speakers.

Unless there is some 'magic' to 'surround' speakers, it seems to me that having towers all around would be killer.

Forget about space requirements & money.

Assuming that they get enough power some somehow:

Is there anything flawed with the idea of using towers placed as 'surround' speakers ?

In the right situation tower rear speakers would be great! One problem wish a lot of tower speakers is that they are so directional and do not fill the room with the details you need from them.

How to connect my subwoofer?

I just purchased a set of surround sound speakers (Polk Audio RM6750). I'm trying to connect my subwoofer to my receiver. It seems subwoofer cables are expensive. Will a standard RCA cable work or do I need a subwoofer cable?

Yes, a RCA cable WILL work. HOWEVER, your sound quality will not be the same. Mainly, your timing will be way off.

Go to one of the big box stores and ask them for an open item cable, they all have them and you can get one at about half off. It is worth the added expense!

I have an elaborate 7.1 surround system. How can I get it to sound like the ones I see in the stores?

I have a Denon receiver and all monster wires. HD going to the receiver from the DVD and to the TV. Klipsch speakers in the front, polk audio for my rears and dipole/bipole sides. I can't seem to get the system to sound like the ones in the stores. Oh, also, I have a pre amped 10inch sub facing a corner about 6 inches away from the wall. (That also hums all the time... very annoying and I have tried different outlets.) Is there a product out there that tests the sound fields that is inexpensive?

Not an uncommon problem.

Sound systems are often handicapped by improper speaker placement and room acoustic problems.

For example, there are certain recommendations for speaker placement (See link 1 and 2). Subwoofer placement is particularly difficult and has specific guidelines (see links 3 and 4 for some suggestions).

Once positioned the balance among the various speakers needs to be adjusted to get optimum sound. On many newer receivers/amps this can be done "automatically" via built in acoustic equalizers controlled via software. Or you can do it manually using a sound level meter (See link 5). You will need to adjust volume, eliminate resonances and tweek positioning to eliminate hot spots and holes.

In addition the room may be too "live" or too "dull". You can add furniture, carpet, drapes or acoustic baffles to "tune" the room.

A whole host of hints are available for tuning your system (See last link for one such list). But ultimately it comes down to you ears and your expectations, and your willingness to tinker and experiment.

Hope this provides some ideas.

How can I convert to Surround Sound?

I have a Yamaha HTR-5730 receiver, with 2 Polk Audio speakers (one on each side of the widescreen Samsung) plus a Polk Audio subwoofer.

I am looking into converting it to a 5.1 home theater system. Can I just add two speakers on the other side of the room and a center speaker in front of (or above) the TV?

I know I can buy a whole system. I just want to know if there are any issues I may not be thinking about by just adding three speakers to my current system.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Bob

Yes. Try to match the speaker you currently have with the same brand of sepakers. The 2 rear speaker does not have to match the back as far as size. The center speaker should match the size of the speakers for the left and right for better sound.
