surround sound speakers, cerwin vega, sony, or polk audio?

i am building a 7.1 system, i have a sony 60 inch hdtv, sony str-de997 receiver

Of the 3 I'd avoid Sony (and most Japanese speaker manufacturers .. although some Onkyo and Yamaha are good for the money). Canadian, US, British and Scandinavian brands are generally the best bets. Cerwin Vega had a good name, but Polk are more "today".

That said, I wouldn't put any of these at the top of my list. There are lot's of others including Klipsch, Distinctive Audio, Totem, Boston, Mirage, Infinity, PSB, Paradigm, ....

For a professional recommendation of top surround sound speakers see the link. That said, I'm not sure whare you are so you may wish to buy a locally supported brand.

Finally, 7.1 is nice, but I personally wouldn't limit myself to 7.1 speaker packages. It's just as good, cheaper, and less limiting to plan to add 2 inexpensive rear speakers to a good 5.1 setup.

Happy hunting.

Home theater setup with HDMI?

I am setting up my home theater and I have run into a snag. I have a AVR146 reciever, Samsung DLP HDTV, Motorola cable box, and Polk surround sound speakers.

Currently, I have cable line from the wall into the HD Cable box, HDMI from cable box to reciever, HDMI from receiver to HDTV, and speakers hooked up to receiver.

Powered everything on and picture is great but sound only comes through the TV speaker. I tried all setting on the reciever but nothing gets sound out of the Polk speakers. All connections are fine.

I could run an audio line (component?) from the TV to the receiver but not sure this is the best idea. Alternatively, there is another AV connection on the cable box (red, red, white, yellow, blue, green).

What am I missing?

Any suggestions are welcomed!

Thanks!

The AVR146 does not process Audio connections, you will have to use the digital connections out of the cable box to get audio

Speakers - 'Home Theatre' - Would Towers work / be cool as 'Surround' Speakers ?

Typically Home Theatre set ups have one tower speaker on either side of the TV, center channel in the middle, a sub, and two (or more) much smaller 'surround' speakers in the back.

Putting aside what you might think about speaker placement or whether a sub is necessary etc, the question is:

Is there any reason to NOT use towers as 'surround' speakers also ?

I have Polk Audio surround speakers now and they are fine and dandy and make cools sounds, etc.

But the towers Rock. I know that the signal that goes to the front speakers is different than the one going to the 'surround' speakers.

Unless there is some 'magic' to 'surround' speakers, it seems to me that having towers all around would be killer.

Forget about space requirements & money.

Assuming that they get enough power some somehow:

Is there anything flawed with the idea of using towers placed as 'surround' speakers ?

In the right situation tower rear speakers would be great! One problem wish a lot of tower speakers is that they are so directional and do not fill the room with the details you need from them.

How to connect my subwoofer?

I just purchased a set of surround sound speakers (Polk Audio RM6750). I'm trying to connect my subwoofer to my receiver. It seems subwoofer cables are expensive. Will a standard RCA cable work or do I need a subwoofer cable?

Yes, a RCA cable WILL work. HOWEVER, your sound quality will not be the same. Mainly, your timing will be way off.

Go to one of the big box stores and ask them for an open item cable, they all have them and you can get one at about half off. It is worth the added expense!

What speakers do I need for the best 7.1 sound?

I recently purchased an INTEGRA DTR 6.9 receiver. This receiver is capable of 7.1 sound and bi-amping. My question is, which would be the best speakers to match what I have, and how/where should I place them? I have large rectangular room. My current set up consists of two Klipsch front floorstanding speakers. My center is a POLK CS400. My sub is an old SONY 10". My surround rears are BOSE 301's. For now I have a JVC center and a CERWIN VEGA center set up as my left and right surrounds.

Should I keep the centers where they are, or should I purchase some new surrounds?
Should I replace the Bose 301's rears with a surround sound speaker?
Thanks.

Sounds like you've got allot going on...Different types, brands and qualities of speakers can lead to a very confusing rig...The ideal setup in any home theatre would be to have all speakers match...

Bose speakers were designed before surround sound existed...That's the principle behind their "direct/reflecting" theory...It creates the illusion of surround from only two speakers...And thus aren't the best choice for true surround...

When you shop for new speakers...NEVER LISTEN TO OPINIONS...JUST LISTEN TO THE SPEAKERS!..Follow this and everything else falls into place...Listen to personal CDs and listen carefully to each possible selection...Hearing your favorite songs on different models will help you decide...

Like most people will say, the choice is subjective...What sounds good to you, may not to me and vice versa...Some popular high-end brands are:

B&W - http://www.bwspeakers.com/
Vandersteen - http://www.vandersteen.com/
Legacy Audio - http://www.legacy-audio.com/

These manufacturers offer much higher end items than what we find at our local home theater store...They also have extensive lines for those who want bookshelfs over floor-standing models...

There are also speciality speakers like electrostats...Electrostats (planars) are LARGE polarized plates that use capacitance to make sound waves...Brands like Magnepan and Martin-Logan have been around for ages...

http://www.magnepan.com
http://www.martinlogan.com

Don't be afraid to also try listening to some recording studio grade speakers...The local music stores (Guitar Center or Sam Ash) usually have a good selection and may even be better quality than what you find at Best Buy...Popular studio monitors are Genelic, ADAM and KRK...

http://www.genelec.com
http://www.adam-audio.com
http://www.krksys.com

I have a set of Focal's (also called JM Labs) and a set of ProAc's...I'd not part with either one..After what seems like the same battle you're fighting, I decided to go with 5 identical speakers for the system...This creates a uniform sound for movies and surround music...Also gives me floorspace back form the large Electrostats I used to have...They sound great...

http://www.focal.tm.fr

Ideally, the speakers should be positioned so that each is the same distance from you (the listener)...Picture this: if you were sitting in the middle of a clock, the center channel sould be at 12:00, the left and right would be at 10:00 and 02:00, and the surrounds should be at about 8:30 and 4:30...

Let me know how you make out...
