Professional Sound Speakers

I want to setup a sound system in my basement that will shake my foundation and make my dinner guest cry. :)

I want to play music (CDs and audip files off a computer. I also want to have a Karaoke option.

Please help with speakers, amplifoiers, and general setup

I'm using windows XP professional, and I believe my sound software is something like Realtek AC97. The more specific you are, the better, because I have minimal computer skills. Help would be greatly appreciated. I am willing to talk it over via yahoo messenger if necessary.

I get no sound from my laptop speakers but when I connect speakers I get poor quality sound. Is it a professional repair job or can you help please. I have Windows xp MS Office 2002

Go into the Device Manager tab (right click on My Computer then Properties)
Now look down the list for anything and everything related to sound and choose to obtain up to date drivers for everything from the internet.
There is a very good chance this will fix your problems.

have an Audigy 2 ZS audio system on my computer with a Creative 7.1 speaker system. However, almost everything on my computer will only play from the front three speakers. The other speakers work (because I've tested them with the Creative software) and the Windows sound settings are set to the correct 7.1 configuration. Is the problem simply that you need to listen to music/games/DVDs etc that have been "created" with surround sound encoding? Even without true surround sound, it would be good if I could at least get my music to play through all 7 speakers at once. Any advice gratefully received. I have Windows XP Professional PC with plenty of memory, a decent processor and a good graphics card so there shouldn't be hardware limitations.
Thanks for the answers below. I have a desktop although I think the Audigy 2 you can buy now is for laptops, as greywolf suggests. Guys, the Audigy 2 definitely has capability to feed to 7.1 speakers because you can run sound tests where it sends different feeds to each speaker. Also in some games I can get surround sound. So I suspect there's no actual problem with the hardware itself or with its capabilities; I'd just be interested to know if there's a way you can switch things that aren't designed in surround sound (that only play out of the front "stereo" speakers) so that they play out of all of the speakers.
