How do I record music that comes from my speakers using audicity?

More info on the "Stereo Mix" that Matthew is referring to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiW4lj5ZU Nc

Note that while that solution has always been the correct way to do it, you might not have that option available... it seems to not get installed by default anymore with many sound card setups.

The following page has a good rundown of what to do if you don't have "Stereo Mix": http://www.niharsworld.com/2008/05/28/no -stereo-mix-recording-option-here-are-fe w-solutions/

How do I record music from mps's (Limewire) without using the mic and speakers? Change to "Line in" didnt work

I tried going to master volume.. Options...properties.. setting mixer device to Realtek HD audio Input.. because the recording option was not available on output. Then i selected OK, then switched from mic to line in.. had the volume all the way up. Then i went into sound recorder. played a song from limewire... recorded like 10 seconds. then selected playback and nothing was recorded. Thats the only way i could come up with. Maybe there is a program? anyways any help or ideas would be great. :) sry for any spelling errors..

Where can I find a program that will let me record music from the internet?

I'll making a bunch of CDs for my mom and she gave me a list of music and a site to get it from, but the site doesn't have the download links, but it will let you listen to the music. I've tried the "Save Target As..." trick, but it doesn't work. So I need a program that will take record the music as its played over the speakers, or whatever.

I tried audacity and it confused me but you can try.

http://www.mp3mymp3.com/ download that and you can record songs and voices and etc. Or with some sound cards you can just do it by hitting record on any audio recording software, like Audacity (a free, open-source audio program). If your sound card doesn't have that capability, you would either have to get one that does, or buy a mixer, such as the Alesis 8 Multi mix USB mixer, which retails for around $150

How come I can't record music playing on my speakers with Audacity?

On my other computer I have no problems. My mixer toolbar shows a bunch of options: Line in, microphone, etc, and I think the one that works is "Wave out." But on my laptop I only have "Line in" and "Microphone" and neither of them work. Do I have an incompatible sound card?

Do you have the Audacity software installed????

I want to record music onto my MacBook Pro with Garageband? Is the only way with the internal speakers?

I have a cord that connects my guitar straight to my Macbook (a 1/4" to a 1/8" cord) but even when I plug it in my Mac just records through the speakers. Is there something I can do to record a cleaner, clearer sound?

"but even when I plug it in my Mac just records through the speakers."

No, speakers "can't hear anything". Your Macbook is trying to use it's built-in Microphone which is NOT how you want to do this. So, you have to learn how to use GarageBand FIRST.

Open Garage Band, then click on the Help Tab and click on: "GarageBand Getting Started". There's a whole section explaining how to use "Real Instruments" and one on "Connecting Music equipment to your Computer".

I'm really happy with my USB preamp for digitizing vinyl records and kinda wish I'd bought it years earlier. It'd have saved me a lot of money in CD remasters and other forms of buying-the-same-damned-record-again. What it allows me to do is remaster the records myself according to my own requirements. I find that I can get a very clean, dynamic sound out of most records I own, without having to worry about the digitized end product being clipped or overcompressed due to the Loudness war - even though I do normalize them to be pretty loud.

And I'm also finding that, because my records are for the most part very clean, it's dead easy. Here are the steps I take to digitize an LP side. These steps assume you have Audacity and a reasonably clean, modern lawnplayer:
