Replacement Stereo Speakers

I have a very old Panasonic home stereo system and some huge floor- standing speakers. I would like to replace the floor-standing speakers with some shelf speakers. What specifications should I look for to ensure that I don't destroy my system?

i would check the impedance for the speakers, it should be on the back where you hook them up, it should be measured in ohms and the symbol should look like a horse shoe.

Stock stereo, 6-disc in dash CD player, 6 speaker system(4 6x8's leg level in front and rear doors, 2 eye level tweeters in front doors). I am no audiophile, nor a tech-spert. yes and no.
the radio will send enough wattage for the speakers to play at moderate to low volumes but when you start to crank the volume past halfway they will sound distorted because the radios internal amp will be overworking itself trying to supply the necessary wattage, for best result you would need a amp on them

Well you have a big range of choices depending on your budget and need.
If you're searching for nice designs high tch and dont care for the bill go for Bang & Olfusen (B&O) they're quiet hight tech and give you pure sound for classical as well as daily music.
If you're more into prectical stuff and want something that gives u good fidelity of sound along with some high tech and design and your budget is quiet resonable go for Bose or JBL systems
If you're more into party music (R&B, hip hop,Rap, rock, ...) and your budget is a little low I guess Sony, Aywa and technics systems are very reliable and give good quality for a rather low price.

I have a 2000 BMW 323Ci (coupe, not convertible) with the Harman Kardon stereo system upgrade.

In both doors the "upper" speakers are having problems, they're giving a "cracking" or "crackling" sound.

Basically I want to replace them but I can find very little after-market information on them.

Is it just one speaker in there or two? I've seen stuff online that leads me to believe there is both a 1" tweeter and 2.5" midrange in the same enclosure.

Where can I find the correct aftermarket replacement speakers that will match up with the HK system?

And where can I find system specs on them?
Snowie: thanks for the answer, although it's discouraging. I think what I'm going to do is order aftermarket speakers (tweeter and subwoofer) that come by themselves (no housing or enclosure) that are specifically marketed as being compatible with the system. (from http://www.bavariansoundwerks.com/ ) They come with specific instructions on how to replace the factory speakers, etc.

You are correct, the upper speakers are made up of 2 separate units permanently moulded on an irregular shaped plastic frame with equally irregularly spaced screw positions. Beyond that, there's nothing special about the speaker units. The 2 units are simply wired in parallel.

Unfortunately, because of that, there is no way you can have an exact aftermarket match without fabricating something on your own (probably using some wood) to match the shape/size.

The easiest way out is to look for a used unit from Ebay or parts recyclers (ie; junkyards).

If you are really adventurous, you'll need to remove the speaker units, take very good measurements, cut some wood, drill some holes, find a good dome tweeter (you probably will not be able to go any bigger than 2.5" due to the mounting screws getting in the way).

The factory HK speakers are unfortunately pretty cheap looking when compared to anything half decent aftermarket. If you want to go through the trouble of cutting wood, you might as well change out the lower speakers too. That way, you can just buy a nice component speaker set (separate woofer and tweeter set). The bottom speaker is also mounted via 3 irregularly spaced screws.

If you go this route, you will find you get much better quality sound.

I fail to understand how BMW can market such sub-par systems as their "premium sound" HK system. Have you seen the rear deck woofers? They're are a joke! There's a common complaint on that for unwanted vibrations from those subs. I got so mad with mine that I disconnected the unit.
