I just got a new shelf stereo system. It was called a "micro" systems but the speakers are over 13" high! And the sub woofer is even larger. Can I put the speakers on their sides on my shelf (so they fit) without losing any sound quality or hurting them in any way? I wasn't sure. And can the subwoofer also be put on its side or pointing toward the ceiling?
The speakers can be placed on their side with no measureable side effects. If they are two way speakers, that is, they have a mid-range speaker with a smaller tweeter above it, you might notice a tiny change but it's nothing to worry about. It won't damage the speakers if they're on their side. If they ARE two way speakers, it's ideal for the tweeter (the smaller speaker) to be roughly at ear level. Also, the distance between the speakers should be equal to the distance you'll be from the unit. So, if you set this up in the living room, measure the distance between your couch and the entertainment center where you set this up. That should be the distance between the speakers themselves.
As for the subwoofer, it can physically be placed on it's side but that is NOT recommended since it's designed to stay upright. For best performance, place the sub in the corner of the room. This way, sound can resonate off the walls. If that's not possible, place it against a single wall. It's best if the room is not carpeted since the carpet can absorb a lot of the bass frequencies coming from the sub (don't go ripping out the carpet, though!). Pointing it towards the ceiling, placing it in the middle of the room, etc will certainly reduce the subwoofer performance so don't do it. Please remember, the sub doesn't need to be out in the open - sub-bass is something you feel more than something you hear.
Do keep in mind that these are recommendations based on best practice. Your individual situation and taste will dictate exact speaker placement. ENJOY!
Just an awesome stereo in general. For the price of $200, this thing is great no matter what kind of music that you play. SONY did a great job ...
Hi, I have an RCA rip n go stereo shelf system with springlock connections. I also have a gateway 64 bit pc running vista. I would like to have both my stereo and pc hooked up to my stereo speakers. The speakers that came with my pc are quite frankly, lousy! My setup is in my bedroom which is app 17x12. I have one of those vertically compact computer desks that accommodates my computer, printer and stereo. I am not looking to blow the walls off the joint given the size of my room but enjoy great bass and loud music on occasion. I'm satisfied with the sound quality of my existing RCA speakers but I cannot hook them up to my pc also. I need advice as to what kind of setup I need to achieve a simultaneous connection while keeping the price under $150 if that's possible. I hope I have not given too much info but too much is better than not enough if you want advice. Also is my present setup ok regarding the fact that my stereo, computer and printer is all being accommodated on my computer desk? I heard somewhere that having all your components too close to each other is not a good idea. Thanks everyone for all your replies.
if your stereo shelf system has a line in input you would run a double ended female cable in just get it at your local radio shack make sure its a stereo cable not mono the Small one (its the head phone sized jack) if your shelf system has rca red and white line inputs you need a y cable one cable that starts with female jack that goes to your computer and splits into red and white rca..if you have neither your shelf system will not accommodate your comp you will need to get some type of system that has line in...or for 79.95 target has a kick ass 2.1 stereo system with sub that hooks up to your comp...i have one and it Sounds Good ....hope this helps

I have a very old Panasonic home stereo system and some huge floor- standing speakers. I would like to replace the floor-standing speakers with some shelf speakers. What specifications should I look for to ensure that I don't destroy my system?
Thanks!
i would check the impedance for the speakers, it should be on the back where you hook them up, it should be measured in ohms and the symbol should look like a horse shoe.

I was at Bestbuy today and noticed that some of the mini systems from Philips and Panasonic have the power supply built into one of the speakers. In other words, you plug the speaker into the wall outlet and then run an extra wire to the control unit for power. Why not just keep the power supply inside the control unit where it belongs? I wanted to mount my system on the wall, but with this design, I'd have a fat power cord running to one of the speakers and an extra wire heading back to the control unit.
Depending on the size of the main unit it could very well be to keep the size of the system down. Since the speakers are big enough to enclose the converter without too much work it could be that or they need to keep the heat inside the unit down.
Yes and no. Let me explain
Usually shelf speaker systems can handle 8-16 ohms or 4 -8 ohms per channel. This is very important to know if you want to add speakers.
Then the speakers are also rated. Subs from 0.5 - 8 ohms and speakers from 4 - 16 ohms.
There are two ways to wire speakers in parallel or series. one doubles the ohm load, the other cuts it in half.
To get optimum efficiency out of your shelf systems shoot for the lowest ohm your amp can handle.
ex. a 4 -8 ohm channel with two 8 ohm speakers wired in *********** will give you 4 ohms. while both speakers wired in *********** will give you 16 ohms. (resulting in speaker coils melting or frying the amp in the system.)
I will not take responsibility for telling you how to wire them. Just look at www.rockfordfosgate.com and go to the "wiring wizard tab"
also a channel with 100 watts at 8 ohms will become more efficient (as long as it is rated for 4-8ohms) at 4 ohms, around 115 watts. So you could have
1. One speaker with 100 watts at 8 ohms or
2 Two speakers with 57.5 watts each at 4 ohms.

Shelf Stereo Systems Reviews: Sharp CD-ES600 5-Disc Shelf System ...

We purchased two of these shelf systems and are very pleased with them. I am giving this model a five-star rating because, for the price, it is a great unit. Obviously it can't compare to a ,000 component stereo system, but unless you need the walls to shake or require every feature available, it doesn't make sense to spend money on a full-size system. With 240-watts of power, this unit has more than enough volume (I never have it more than 1/4 of the way up except to see what it can do) and has a surprising amount of bass for that size speakers. It even has a bass booster button, which...
