Home audio speakers, are smaller dual woofers better than a single large one?
Hello World!

I'm looking to upgrade my stereo system with a new pair of 3-way speakers, everything I see seems to use a dual woofer configuration. My current speakers use a single 12 inch woofer with two horns, one for the midrange, and one for the high end. my main concern is not going "Backwards" in relationship to what I already have, "Rock" solid bass.

they are using 2 smaller speakers vs one larger because they are faster , quicker (sound - cleaner) more acurate .

How can i connect my 5.1 speakers to a single audio out jack?
Hello World!

Easy.

You plug a simple adapter in between a single (digital) audio output jack and your five speakers and powered subwoofer.

This adapter is commonly called an A/V receiver.

$150 to $2,500 and up.

Happy shopping.

I have a new laptop which only has a single audio jack output, my existing surround speakers have three?
Hello World!

jack plug connectors - is there a device I can get to connect the speakers? Or do I need to buy new speakers?

Surround sound (5.1) takes three inputs.

Front
Rear
Sub woofer.

The audio jack in your laptop provides Stereo (2.1) sound, meaning the other two jacks from your system can not be used.

You either have the option of just plugging in your front speakers or buying an external soundcard for the laptop, to allow 5.1 sound.

There are USB, Firewire and pcmcia versions of the soundblaster X-Fi for this purpose.

Can I join the audio outputs from 4 computers into a single input on the speakers?
Hello World!

I have 4 computers but I don't want to have 4 sets of speakers - can I just join all 4 audio outputs together using 'Y' adapters and then connect them into one set of speakers? I would like it so I can hear all four computers at once, if necessary.

Yes, but, the "all at once" idea presents some problems as you don't want any one to be able to feed back into any others audio output circuit. The simplest way would be to use a 4 way switch, with the speakers on the wipers and each computer on one each of the gangs. Since the whole mess is using a common ground, you can use a double switch, with the right channel on the front half and the left on the back. The grounds would just hook to a common point.

How to convert from a single audio cable to positive and negative speaker terminals?
Concept Car Sound Navigation System

The manual for my tv says I can use it's speaker as the center channel for my 5.1 surround system (it's a good speaker). The problem is the tv has a single "audio center channel" in port and the receiver only has the positive and negative bare wire (or banana plug) out ports for the center channel. Do I need to buy some sort of line converter or is this impossible to connect?

If the port on your tv is an RCA type connector (like the red, white and yellow ones on the back of dvd players), you should be able to splice the cables from your receiver into an old spare RCA (male) connector to get input. Usually, the tip (inner post) of the RCA plug is the positive (+) and the shield (outer barrier) is the negative (-). Alternatively (to avoid blowing the life out of the speaker in your tv), you could always pick up an affordable centre channel speaker off eBay or just use a regular speaker as a centre channel until you can afford a decent one.

You "can" connect up the internal one of your tv set, but make sure the ohm rating matches with your receiver.

Good luck !!
