Computer surround sound viable?

I have my computer hooked up to my tv and I have a receiver, ps2, etc. The dvd player/receiver puts out good enough sound but I've been debating with getting a single speaker simulated surround system. So my question comes in that there are a lot of sound cards these days that boast 5.1-7.1 surround sound. Are they any great sounding surround computer speakers out there? And are there any single speaker simulated surround sound speakers that could run off a computer? I'm sure I could have done the research but this seemed quicker. Thanks.

Hi theanswerstore,

I have a similar setup.
I'm running an LCD TV (coaxial cable), PC, Blu-Ray on a

My sound card is the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Fata1ity Pro

The X-Fi output is only 2-channel stereo, yet the YHT is still able to create a surround-sound experience.

I decided to ditch my Boston Acoustics computer speakers (which sounded great) and now I run everything through the YHT.

I'm totally pleased with the YHT's performance.

Best regards,

What is the best virtual surround sound solution for odd-shaped rooms?

I have a pentagon shaped room w/no ability to mount rear speakers. Because of the room, only one person can sit directly in front of the television. Others sit to right or left, covering about 130 degrees. A single-speaker surround system doesn't seem like a good option for people off to the side. Is there a good two speaker option? I have my own sub-woofer.

Two speakers would work (left and right) front speakers, but you would not get the full surround effect.
Some speaker mfgs. are coming out with new speaker design for surround sound without using five speakers. Yamaha and Polk come to mind. What they have done is enlarge the center speaker with many tiny speakers, so some direct the sound directly to you and some speakers deflect their sound to bounce of the walls to give the illusion of rear speakers without there being any rear speakers. This might work best for you if you can afford new speakers.

how does the single speaker cable work for the subwoofer on a surround sound setup?

Because the subwoofer output on most surround sound amps & receivers is in mono instead of stereo. So it only needs one cable instead of two cables.

Multichannel Surround Sound from TV to HTIB?

I have digital cable and recently bought the Sony Home Theater in a Box system (DAV-DX375). I have Video/Audio connections from my cable box to TV (HDMI) and from HTIB to TV (HDMI). I don't have a digital audio in on my HTIB so I have audio connections through red/whites from TV to HTIB. My question is this...I can get the TV audio playing through all my speakers, but I dont believe it is true surround sound in the sense that different audio channels are sent to each speaker. It just sounds like each speaker is playing the single channel normal TV sound. The surround effect is much different when I am watching DVDs (i.e., voices from the center speaker and distant noises coming from the rear speakers). What am I doing wrong? Or how can I tell if a TV program can be received in a tru surround format?

Without a digital audio (optical or coaxial) connection between your receiver and TV, you cannot achieve true Dolby Digital or DTS surround sound. What you are experiencing from your TV is good old Dolby Pro Logic which is why your DVDs sound so much better. You're not doing anything wrong, you've just realized why that HTIB was so cheap.

Please id my surround sound amp speaker connections for me?

with a tweeter, a 150mm cone, 2 x 180mm cone and a hole, omg.
These big ones have 2 x + terminals and 2 x - terminals,
but they seem to have jumpers across the terminals, both neg to neg and pos to pos.
Please help, omg what have i got into ???????
I bought them as i liked the colour, it just so goes with my furniture....

Thanks heaps if you can help
Maddy

MR and ML are the front right and left. These are the large floor standing speakers you have. CEN is the center channel and it should be smaller than the main fronts and larger or the same size as the rears. You seem to know which one is the center anyway. The 2 smaller ones are the SR and SL (Surround right and left). They go to the sides of the listener. The jumper wires are for bi-wiring. Just leave them in place since you won't be bi-wiring them. You should also have a subwoofer which will look like a box unless the mains (2 big ones) have the subwoofer inside them.

P.S. I have to add that "I liked the color" is a terrible reason to buy speakers!!! :-) Sorry, I just couldn't answer without saying that.

Oh yeah, The RR and RL are for rear speakers in a 7.1 setup. You won't be using them so just leave them as they are. If you decide to buy 2 more speakers for the rear of the room, then you'll hook those to RR and RL and they should be the same speakers as the SL and SR.

  • ZVOX 325 Single-Cabinet Surround Sound System | DevicePedia.com

The ZVOX 325 is a simple solution for people seeking a surround sound system. Maybe you don’t have much space in your room or you can’t be bothered with the hassle of a 5.1 or 7.1 system. This is a single box with one cable to connect it up and it provides you with rich, 3D sound whether you are listening to music or watching movies. It has a PhaseCue virtual surround system and it was created by Winslow Burhoe.

The reviews are extremely positive and it has a great consumer rating. For $299.99 it offers sound quality you would associate with a much more expensive system. It also offers terrific convenience with no hassle placing speakers and running wires everywhere. Whether it really gives you a surround sound effect or not will still depend on the acoustics of your room and the positioning of the device but as alternatives to 5.1 set-ups go this is a great device.
