I think my car's factory (stock) speakers blew out -- they now only work at lower volume levels, but for limited periods of time. I have speakers from my previous car (Polk EX602a 6 1/2 inch), which I want to install in my current car. But I don't want the same thing to happen to these speakers. The stereo is a Sony EXR-400 cassette am/fm receiver/tuner. I don't know how to tell if they'll be compatible.
I'm looking into possibly getting a Kenwood KC-335 cassette am/fm receiver/tuner.
My current car is a 1996 Nissan 200SX.
Check out the power rating. Your receiver or Head Units (HU) always comes in total Max Power output or PMPO. Same with speaker ratings. We normally look at RMS ouput of the amps/receivers but some mfgs prefer bigger numbers with their PMPO. If both HU and Speakers are the same then 80% of the time its ok.
But if your HU is a bit low, stick with Coaxial speakers which requires less power (and give less power) from your HU than component speakers.
PS. Nice car!

does anyone know the best way to have them installed, i have 6 + 9' sony xlpod speakers and i have a nissan altima car
I recommend returning them and getting a 6-3/4" which is what fits in the Altima, especially if you're going to be running a subwoofer.

I installed new sony speakers, and after about a week, it blew out!
Heres my story..
I had my old sony speakers in the front and back of my car, and they started blowing out as I played them too loud.. I placed the volume at 24 out of 35. ..
I then upgraded to a better sonys rear speakers(SONY XS-GT6935A), which is alot louder, and as for the front speakers, they are louder than my old front speakers as well.
I installed the new speakers, and they were great. I placed the volume 25-27 of 35. And the bass was deeper as well. The sounds were crystal clear.
I used it for a few days everything was going great with loud deep bass music (r&b, rap, pop, etc), but then all of a sudden, the speakers in the front and back blew out! I was scared, so I turned the stereo off for 5 minutes, and decided to see how it sounded. All of a sudden the speakers were working normally again, loud with a deep bass sound.. I was confused why that happened.. Was it because the stereo couldn't handle it or the speakers blew out?
Then I continued playing the music 24-27 of 35 and everything was ok for a few days after, then it happened again, it blew out, turned off for 5 minutes, and it was playing normal. A few days later, it happened again, but this time it was a permanent blow out. The sound is ok only up to 15-18(has a clear sound), but when I get to 19 and up, my speakers start blowing out and making that nasty broken speaker noise..
I also noticed that was fishy was that the front and rear speakers blew out at the same time.. I thought the front speakers would blow out first since they're not as strong as the rear speakers.
My question is... did I blow my speakers out? Or did I somehow blow out my stereo? If thats even possible. My stereo is 50 watts 4x channel by kenwood.
Or was it because I played it so loud where the bass unwired my wires(I installed the speakers myself, and haven't added electrical tape or sodder the wires)
Thanks for any help!

Several things going on here. First running your head unit cranked way up can cause the amplifier inside to over heat espicially if the resistance is mis-matched from receive to speakers. Not having the speaker wires properly attached can potentially cause a short circuit that can damage both the receiver and speakers. The easist way to check is to hook up your head unit to known good speakers and run it. If it dose ok then it probably isn't damaged. Then check the speakers, pull them out and see if the cone has seperated from the coil of has torn around the outside.
If you want to listen to your stereo loud then you need to invest in the proper amps/ cross overs and quality proper impendence speakers. Trying to run your stereo loud without outboard amp will just over heat it as there is very little air circulation.
Hope your equipment is ok. Check the head unit first to make sure it works, I use home stereo speakers.

Car stereo question - MajorGeeks Support Forums
Right now I've got two sony explod 6" 2-way 4ohm car stereo speakers set up in a box. I'm toying with the idea of getting two more 4ohm car stereo speakers to cross wire the two sets together to hopefully make two 8ohm(one right, one left) loads to hook up with my home stereo. One set of car speakers I'm looking at is another 2-way set and it says there's a built in crossover. I don't know if the ones I have currently have a built in crossover or not.
