Home Speakers Answers
I am in need of new speakers for my new home theater system, however as tech savy as I am, speakers are not my forte. The current speakers I run are 8 Ohm impedance, 150W, 91DB Sound pressure, with 36Hz-22Khz range. These are Onkyo Fusion AVs. I need a good pair of slim line speakers, and I have found a few that I like however I am not sure how they compare with my current set.
Can somone please explain to me which of these statistics should be lower, and which should be higher for optimal sound quality.
Thanks!
You want your speakers to handle your system's output power, so you'll need at least 150W speakers.
The 91 dB sound pressure is an indication of the efficiency of the speakers. Higher is more efficient, lower is less efficient. Remember that dB is logarithmic, so a 3 dB change is a factor of 2 (88 dB uses twice the power to sound as loud as your 91 dB speakers).
A key spec of the frequency range was left out, and that is the variation from one frequency to another -- i.e. +/- 3 dB. Ideally, you'd like +/- 0 dB so all frequencies would sound the same with the same power input, but that's not going to happen, so most spec how close they come to the ideal. A speaker with +/- 0.5 dB across the frequency range will sound far more accurate that one that is +/- 3 dB (remember that 3 dB is a factor of 2).
The wider and flatter (+/- 0dB) the frequency range, the better.
Impedance by itself generally doesn't relate to sound quality; you just need to match your amplifier's preference for best results.
But remember that the specs are the manufacturer's specs, not independently certified specs. You'd do well to consult audio review magazines for their test results of the speakers you're thinking of instead of believing the manufacturer's specs. They aren't perfect, either, but they will probably be more objective than the OEM.
One of my horns quit working for no reason. This video will show the troubleshoot and quick determination as to what happend for the horn to quit.
I bought and installed a webcam yesterday, and now my sound does not work at all. I have $100 Altec Lansing speakers, how do I get the sound to play again.
Im not exactly tech-savvy, so please kinda explain it as best as u could.
Look into the program that you installed with your webcam. Perhaps there was a setting in it in its options that muted your speakers. Look through all of the menus in that program. Also just check your Windows audio settings and make sure you just didn't mute your speakers or turned down the volume accidentally.

I have a couple of Polk Audio bookshelf speakers that I'm trying to use with a new Onkyo TX-SR504 receiver. When I try to play a DVD or a CD after a while the speakers cut out.
Onkyo tech support said either my speaker wire or my speakers have a short. After trying new speaker wire, and connecting the speakers individually, the sound still cuts off after anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. So, I guess the speakers have shorted...
I'm not very savvy with electricity or electronics. Just curious how the speakers may have short-circuited so I can avoid it in the future.
Also just seeking a second opinion. Does it sound like my speakers short-circuited? Onkyo tech support said if the receiver was the problem, I wouldn't hear any sound at all.
Thanks for any help.
Thanks all for your suggestions and ideas... can't believe how complicated this all is. But I will try to do some troubleshooting this weekend!
Thanks again.
thanks to everyone who gave their advice. it was *all* useful... going to be tough to pick a best answer.
As for the receiver, I've decided to return it and try a new one. Everything seems to point to the Onkyo, particularly after the heat, wiring, and other knowledge shared here.
Thanks again.
Perhaps someone can correct me if I am wrong but although it is common to experience a short circuit in speaker wire it is not very common to have a short circuit in the speakers themselves. A short circuit occurs in an audio system when positive and negative charges meet, interrupting the way the current was supposed to flow and causing an undesirably high current flow from the amplifier. This usually happens when the positive and negative wires touch at either speaker or amplifier terminals. It is possible for there to be a short circuit inside of a speaker but if this is the problem it can be repaired. I would check to make sure you have no exposed positive and negative wires touching (not even a little!). The Onkyo tech should have advised you as to how to isolate the problem. You should try some other speakers with the receiver and try the speakers on a different receiver. A possible source of your problem could be that the receiver cannot drive a 4 ohm load. Many Polk bookshelf speakers have a 4 ohm impedance. Eight ohms is the norm and the lower 4 ohm impedance causes the amplifier to work harder. Some receivers can only drive a 4 ohm speaker for a limited time before overheating and going into protect mode (no output). I would expect, however, your Onkyo to have no trouble with a pair of 4 ohm bookshelf speakers. As for the Onkyo tech...I am sure Onkyo has a very skilled staff, but I am also sure that standard procedure is to get customers to look at every other possible source of a problem before concluding the source of their problem is in the Onkyo product. Unless one of the experienced techs that sometimes answer questions here rules out the receiver as a possible source of trouble I would not assume that all is well with your receiver until you have checked to see if your speakers cause a similar problem with a different receiver.

And another question, are these speakers good? Are they compatible? If not, what other speakers do u recommend? The price has to be below $100 USD
Thanks
as long as you have the right cables, the speakers should work just fine.
Logitech speakers rock out with their roosters out. i have the 2.1 channel ones and they put out better sound than my dad's big screen. the price is really reasonable also
I am looking for some great speakers that have similar features to the Paradigm Studio 100 V2 or the Def Tech 7001.
I am trying to find speakers that cost $2500 or less, and if I can, used for less than $2000.
Can you tell me which speakers sound the best and is worth the price? Thanks!
The best speakers are the magical panel speakers primarily dominated by two brands, Martin Logan and Magnepan. They are based on different technologies but both sound very different to paper cone speakers
Martin Logan speakers are easier to find. They can be found at independent audio solons and Magnolia stores. If used speakers are acceptable my favorite speaker under $2500 is the Aerius.
Magnepan’s are available only at independent audio solons and much harder to find. Magnepan has a web only special on their least expensive speaker – a 60 day money back guarantee and 100% credit toward better models for one year. Personally, would travel to the closest store and listen prior to purchasing.
Once you’ve heard these speakers you’ll never be satisfied with box speakers and paper cones again.

Indoor/Outdoor Wireless Speaker from The Sharper Image | e-Tech Gadget
I’ve already covered the Rotating Speaker System from Sharper Image just the other day, but this next product from that company is for those who want to take their speakers out of the room, or even out of the house.
The Indoor Outdoor Wireless Speaker comes in two main parts. The first is a transmitter that hooks up to your laptop or MP3 Player via headphone jack. This transmitter beams the sound to the stereo speaker (that you see in the photo) for a range of 160 feet.
I had a chance to try it out for myself, and the speaker plays the “rich, full-range sound” that it advertises. There is a volume control on top of the speaker, so the user doesn’t have to go to the transmitter to turn it up or down.
