What should I look for when buying replacement home stereo speakers?

I have a very old Panasonic home stereo system and some huge floor- standing speakers. I would like to replace the floor-standing speakers with some shelf speakers. What specifications should I look for to ensure that I don't destroy my system?

Thanks!

i would check the impedance for the speakers, it should be on the back where you hook them up, it should be measured in ohms and the symbol should look like a horse shoe.

looking for floor standing speakers for a stereo system?

any ideas what brands will be good to look into? I've been looking at Klipsch, Polk, Pure Acoustics and Infinity and what not and really, i haven't heard many of them to get an idea of the general sound of each brand. I dont really know where to go to test any of these out either. So i guess this question is just about other brands to consider that aren't thousands and thousands of dollars

The brands you mentioned are good brands, and have speakers in a wide range of prices. There are also many other (Bose, Jamo, AR, etc.) However, if you care about sound quality, you should audition the speakers. Even high-quality speakers sound different, and often it is only a matter of taste as to which you would prefer. If you are going to spend significant money on a good system, it is worth it to spend the time to listen to as many as you can. You might also listen to some very high-end units (you wouldn't buy) just to set a reference as to what the best sound like.

How do i use my vintage floor standing speakers?

thats what it looks like. all it has on the back is the red and black thing shown in the pic. It does not look like a port to me, and i dont know how to use it.
the red and black thing is not like a regular port. it does not fit in flushly at all.

The red and black connections are for speaker wire, and there will be corresponding red and black connectors on the back of the amplifier/receiver. Speaker wire, whatever the colour, has one plain coloured wire and one with a black stripe. This is how you use the connectors.

Bare the ends of both wires, take off about 8-10mm of the plastic cover and twist the bare end of each wire so you don't get any strands of wire sticking out. Take the plain coloured wire and hold down the little red tab on the back of the speaker. Push the bare end of the plain coloured wire into the little hole just above the tab. Let go of the tab. It will spring back up and hold the bare part of the wire tightly. Make sure that there are no strands of bare wire hanging out. Now do the same with the wire which has the black stripe. Put that into the black connector on the speaker.

Now connect the other ends of the wires to the amplifier in exactly the same way - plain colour to red, striped wire to black.

By the way, that's a very fine pair of speakers you have there, even by today's standards.

What does 'RMS' stand for, when looking at stereo speakers?

When looking at stereo speaker equipment, there are 'watt' ratings [eg: 50watts] and 'RMS' ratings [eg: 50watts rms] .... I'd like to know what 'RMS' is and the difference between rms and watts.

RMS is the watts rating that your speakers will output on a continuous basis.....so if your speakers are 50 watts RMS and it says that the peak power output is 75 watts it means that no matter what you are getting at least 50 but in some conditions/volume levels it can go up to 75 watts.

  • Top Stereo Speakers: Stereo speakers - choosing the right ones

Sound is important when choosing your next stereo speakers, however it is also important to see the room where the speaker will be assembled and set up. Depending on your room size, the adequate speaker size needs to be purchased. You can't buy a small set of speakers for a huge hall. Also it is important to get the color that nicely matches and blends in with the room color.
