Stereo Loudspeakers

A friend has offered to sell me stereo loudspeakers that have volume controls that go up to 11 - not the usual 10.He assures me that they give a louder and clearer sound than ordinary stereo loudspeakers. When I asked him why the dials were not just calibrated from 1 to 10 like ordinary speakers he just keeps repeating "These go up to 11." Should I trust him and buy the loudspeakers off him?

your guitar pick up will not give enough signal for a regular car amp unless there is a mic input. your pick up output will be like 1/10 of the signal needed for lots of power. to fix this find a pre amp of some kind. an old tape deck, mixing board, anything to take a weak signal like for a voice microphone and bring it up to like 500 millivolts peak at full volume. the head phone out put on a old tape deck will be about right often. it can be done for sure.

I recently purchased a pair of decent-quality loudspeakers which have standard speaker cable inputs. I intend to purchase an amplifier/receiver of similar quality to power them, but it is likely to be some time before I manage to do this.

In the meantime, I want to hook the speakers up to my existing system, which is an awful little stand-alone hi-fi system from Panasonic that I bought for $400 a few years back. However, the system is "bi-wired," which I presume means that there is a 2-way cross-over between the amp and the stock speakers. As a result, there are two pairs of speaker wire per speaker output from the amp (one "high" and one "low").

Is there any way to effectively hook my new speakers up to this amp?

I presume I will need to by-pass the internal cross-over, or re-combine the channels somehow, but any better suggestions would also be appreciated.

If the "high" and "low" are frequency, then yes, it seems likely that there's an internal crossover, one option would be to run two sets of wires to your new loudspeakers, and try to bypass any crossover built into the loudspeakers. However, that requires possibly modifying your loudspeakers. Since your hi-fi system is "on the way out" (i.e. you probably intend to replace it before your loudspeakers), I'd suggest hacking that first. You might be able to bypass its crossovers.

I'm sorry I can't be more specific, but I can at least state -- recombining the two outputs (high and low) only to have your loudspeakers split them again (via internal crossover) is almost certainly the worst option -- every split/join has a good chance of reducing fidelity.

What are the absolute top of the line BEST home stereo loudspeakers on the market today?

As you can see with the Transmission Audio post that the "best" is also the "most ridiculous". Usually when someone asks what the best speakers are they mean what is the best for the price. This answer is still subjective to the listener but there are several brands that consistently get great reviews for the price. Among these are Paradigm, Jamo, Energy, Polk Audio, Boston Acoustic, Klipsch and others. These would be considered great value brands but they are not the only ones. Incidental, Energy and Jamo are owned by Klipsch which surpassed Bose as the number one manufacturer of speakers in the world a few years ago and is the oldest American manufacturer of speakers. Unfortunately Bose is no longer considered good for the price. Not even a little bit. It seems they have put most of their R&D(what little of it they do anymore) into headphones and automotive technologies.
In "High End" circles however Magnepan's MG 20.1 are often considered the best speakers available, regardless of price. I haven't head those but the best I have heard is Wilson Audio's $27,000 a pair Watt Puppies.
