Get an ohm meter for about ten dollars. Tie the wires together at the speaker and put the ohm meter at the radio. Touch one lead to one side of the speaker plug and the othe lead to the ground of the speaker plug. If the ohm meter beebs, it's a good connection.

As I read the question, you can't. You need something to power the speakers like an amp or a stereo receiver. Run the PC audio out to the stereo or amp.
If I'm reading the question wrong and you have red and black RCA cables going to a stereo, amp, or powered speakers you can use a mini-jack to RCA adapter available at any electronics store (see link). The mini-jack gets plugged into the computer audio or headphone out.

My rear speakers hardly ever work. They work more often when the car is very hot inside.
some new gm vehicles 199 to 2006 have a separate amplifier for rear speakers
all car stereos only have 4 outputs 2 ic chips 2 channles on each it is posible that the rear channels are going bad if you don't have a factory amplifier

I recently connected my PC to my home stereo (5.1 surround sound). It is connected from a digital output on the back of my PC to a digital input on the stereo receiver via a coaxial cable. While it sounds great when playing movies/music through the surround sound, the connection has made my PC speakers obsolete, and now any sound (including windows shutdown music) is blasted through the home stereo speakers. My question is, is there a way to automatically switch between PC speakers and home stereo speakers without manually unplugging the cable every time?
Your PC audio card should have some sort of an application to control audio out. It is usually under the Start->Control panel -> Sound or it may be a separate application.
