I have an Infiniti QX4 with a 6 disc in-dash Bose CD player with tape. I'm getting an "error 2" message and I cannot play any CD- I've recently looked into getting the stereo repaired. I have heard this happens quite often with Bose. I've been quoted about $350 to have it shipped off and repaired. Is this a good estimate? And are Bose speaker incompatable with most car stereos (this is what I've heard)?? Please help!
It's true you cant use the bose speakers with an aftermarket radio .I'd check ebay for a replacement radio or used parts websites .Here's a link to a model sold on ebay , am not sure if it resembles yours but if fits infiniti's and is bose and is alot cheaper than your repair estimate .

(I did this video some time ago, but I recently fixed my other speaker, and it prompted me to post this video again...) Over time, the foam rings ...
I have a pair of old school realistic HOME stereo speakers. I repaired the foam surround on them, but Im still having a problem.
The one woofer in the speaker cabnit is fine , no problem.....but in the other cabnit when i turn up the volume past 5 i get a serious annoying HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.
The speakers are rated at 150 watss, the power amp Im using is rated @ 300 watts. the speaker connectors are connnected right, and I know this because the connectors for each speaker are diffrent sizes, so there is no way to confuse the two.
It dosnt sem like the foam urround wasnt repaired right, even if so it should nt hum like that if it wasnt.....right?
First swap the left and right speaker cabinets and see if the HUM follows the speaker. If the HUM moves with the speaker, then the speaker in the problem. If the HUM stays on the same amplifier channel, then something else is wrong. If it is not the speaker then you need to look at you system. Hum is commonly caused by a ground loop or the shield of an RCA patch cord going bad. Do a good visual inspection of all of the RCA patch cords and make sure they are all seated. If everything looks good and it still hums, disconnect all of the RCA patch cords from the tuner/preamp. Turn the system on and select the different inputs on the tuner/preamp and see if it hums. If there is no hum, connect each component to the tuner, one at a time and try it to see if it hums. Keep doing this until you find the bad cord or component.
If it still hums with only the amp and tuner connected (nothing else connected to the tuner), swap the RCA patch cords between the tuner and the amp. If the hum moves to the other channel, you have a bad cord. If the hum stays on the same channel you have an equipment problem. Check the polarization of the AC power cords, some older equipment is not polarized and can be plugged in either way.

I recently moved a pair of electro voice interface series 2 speakers and a sansui AU X301/i amplifier that were just sitting a corner of the lounge room into my room and hooked them up to my xbox, tv and ipod. They were just sitting around because when we moved house we got a new surround sound system. I am wondering how good the stereo system is, because i estimate it to be over 20 years old. My late father bought them before i was born, and according to my mum he was a gear feak, so she reckons they are awsome. The thing is the large cones in the speakers are giving some distortion from medium to high level volume,so should i get them repaired or buy a new system?
You don't specify the specific model, but in general these speakers have a good reputation. See the link for some info.
While the speakers may be damaged in some way (e.g. a cone could have a small tear, or the cones might have got damp at some point) but there may other reasons for the distortion. I'd suggest connecting the speakers to another amp (e.g. your surround system) before assuming it's the speakers themselves.
If necessary replacement (8") Woofers are on offer on eBay for a reasonable price (See 2nd link) ... but only one day left to bid.

I have a pair of older Boston Acoustic 3-way speakers with 10" woofers. Both woofers are blown. I see kits for $20 to repair the speakers, but I'm thinking, maybe I should go to the local stereo shop and buy some generic 10" woofers to replace the originals.
A long time ago I fixed a pair of blown infinitys using silicone caulk. Don't laugh, the result was amazing and it cost me $3. They lasted about 5 years until my daughter blew them again...
Otherwise, I agree with Captain H (above.)
My sister has one she will give me, her 17 yr old son tried to hook stereo speaker system to it-turned it on and screen went black and hasn't worked since. I can't remember the brank name but would it be worth repairing?
I don't know how old it is but I'm sure it will be min $250 and likely 400-600 it depends on whats wrong with it . Get a service person to do an estimate on it. This may not be free, where I used to work estimate was about $60 and it went towards repair if you went ahead... Make sure you ask alot of questions, alot of older big screens are really expensive for parts I've seen bills just for parts at $1500 bucks
