Home Speakers Answers
Ok so I have this old stereo system that stopped working a while ago, and my computer speakers are pretty lousy so I was wondering if i could hook up the speakers from my system to my computer. Each of the speakers has an input and output line, similar to the computer speakers I already have.
I also have an older pair of speakers... I was thinking that I could cut their wires off and connect my stereo speakers to their plug instead (through welding or electrical tape). Is this possible?
And finally, the one thing my stereo speakers don't have, is a direct connection to the outlet. Normal they would go through the stereo, which would connect to the outlet through it's own plug. Could the speakers work similarly with my computer? Or would they also need a separate outlet (like my current speakers do)? And if so, how would I go about connecting them to one?
Beyond all of this, would my computer even have enough power to make them work?
Thanks.
Here are some resources that might help:

No. The speakers won't work because the computer doesn't put out enough juice. You would hear something from them if you got them all wired in but it would be so quiet that it would just be silly.
Just buy some new speakers and throw all that old junk away.

I was considering upgrading my 6-disc changer to an Onkyo DX 7555 because it apparently is a better sounding CD player.
Now most people that review this CD player say they are powering it with an Onkyo A-9555 integrated stereo amplifier because they claim it sounds almost "tube like."
I plan on or was planning on picking up an Onkyo SR606 HT receiver for my new HT setup. What is the best way to power a CD player like the DX7555 and good stereo speakers for the best sound quality?
Separate amplifiers tend to sound a little better than integrated receivers, but that also depends on the quality overall. Most seperate systems start getting pricey and the quality is usually high. Typically one would have a preamp and amplifier(s). The A-9555 is an integrate amplifier, meaning it has a preamp built in.
The 9555 is a little bit more expensive than the 606. One thing the 9555 will lack in compared to the 606 is bass management, in case you are using a subwoofer. I don't see a subwoofer output on that model.
What I would do is audition the A-9555 along with a TX-SR606 and see if you can hear the difference. You gain a lot of other features with the 606 (like a radio tuner, and possible use as a 5.1 or 7.1 channel system), so if your ear is happy with it you save $$$ and have a more versatile product. Step up to the 706 and you would have a THX Select2 certified receiver with Audyssey MultEQ auto setup (makes a nice difference in sound I think).

I currently have a Bose AM15 setup for movies and I have a Velodyne CT-100 to take care of the extra low end. I'm no audiophile but the Bose sounds "lacking" for stereo music. 5.1 movies sound OK though.
As far as dedicated stereo speakers, I'm only really familiar with the really good reviews on the Bose 301's. Do you recommend another brand and/or model?
I'm looking to spend about $500 a pair max.
Stick with the Bose. I have the 301s for my stereo and they are great.

ive had mixed reviews on this so far. some say that the stock speakers sound better and others say the stock speakers still sound bad. could u answer w/ info to back it up?
Everything depends on the model/make of car and the current sound system. It also depends on how much of a improvement you want. You should see some improvement, but there is only a certain amount that you can ask speakers to do before they give up the ghost.
As a general rule though, improving the head unit will improve the sound quality, because ensuring a clean signal to your speakers is more important for sound quality than a good set of speakers without a good head unit.
Incidentally, you are more likely to damage speakers by running them at max volumes from head units that cannot supply the current needed (ie cheap units). Speakers are very forgiving if you run them with a "clean" source, ie something that can provide the high current required.
In terms of both sound quality and speaker life, you should get a head unit that can provide more power than really necessary. Even if you don't use the extra power it means that the internal components are not having to work as hard, therefore the distorsion will be lower, and the speakers will get clean current.
Another thought on wattage is on how manufacturers actually rate their products. In the US there are strict regs for rating the wattage (distortion levels, SNR, etc), in Europe there are no regs, so power ratings tend to be overestimates - particularly if you buy from a budget manufacturer. To run the unit at the power level some have quoted, will mean that the unit suffers from significant distortion. This obviously isn't true for all manufacturers, but it does happen.
I have a micro component system (Sony cmt-bx1), only 30 watts. It is incredible, though, because it seems like it is more powerful than it is.
However, my personal experience with it, along with reviews on it would say that the speakers don't quite do the system justice.
There is nothing really wrong with them, but I just want a better set, that is all.
My criteria for new speakers:
-at least 15 watts each
-$100 at most
-1.5' tall or so at max
-good shelf speakers
I would also prefer it if they were ones you have experienced yourself, or at least with good reviews.
The speaker should have good full range sound, especially good bass response.
Here's a pair of used Klipsch KG 1 speakers on eBay (buy it now) for $76, plus about $20 shipping. This is a great price. I got a pair of Klipsch KG 0.5s a couple years ago for $60 plus about $30 shipping. These puppies cost like $250 a pair new. And, they pack quite a punch for such a small bookshelf speaker.
If I needed a pair of great bookshelf speakers, I would snap these up in a minute.

iHM10B Portable Ipod Player Stereo Speaker System review
I got this gadget in Hongkong. I have to stay for a couple of days there and the hotel I was staying does not have an Ipod speaker. The shape of this one looked like those I saw in IStore here in the Philippines, chic and modern. Because I was on a hurry, I grabbed it and then hurried home to take a quick nap before I have to do lots of things during the night.
These are the things that I like about this Ipod Speaker:
First, it carries with it a protective case which prevents from scratches or damages on it. Especially when you are heading to the beach and wants to listen to music while drinking pina colada, your speaker will eventually have some scratches on it. But with the protective gear that it had, this is a sure safeguard.
