Is it possible to hook up JUST the stereo speakers to my laptop? ?
JVC Cassette stereo deck with speakers

If not is there a way i could build a small enough system to power them so i could hook them upto my laptop? i bought two regular sony stereo speakers at a garage sale for cheap thinking i could do this PLEASE HELP links or any info would be great :)

No.
Speakers must have some amperage (watts) to work & computers just don't have enough punch.
I picked up a 'Surround sound' system (Walmart) for about $60 and this will do it...just replace on set of the stock speakers with your Sony's.
Don't expect to be throwing any block parties with it, this way also has limited 'push' but it's not bad for home use.
More volume requires more amps (watts). Look for a 100watt + range for serious rock 'n rollin'

stereo speaker help?
JVC Cassette stereo deck with speakers

i bought some stereo speakers at a sale and i know they work but now that i have them i cant find anything to do with them. is there a way to make them go surround sound or hook them up to my xbox's audio. i need major help. and i dont have a stereo i can use them with. all they have are a black and red cable coming out of them and thats it.

First of all, you need something to power them with, like a receiver or amplifier. you would then hook your Xbox's audio cables(the red & white cables) into the receiver.

Should I use a second subwoofer with my rear speakers?

I was in a high-end stereo shop the other day. The sales guy was not pushy and he seemed to have good ideas. He was telling me that a sub wired with the rear speakers would enhance the movie experience dramatically. It makes sense, bit I have never heard of such a thing…and I consider myself a “freshman” audiophile. I have a lower grade sub that is packed in my garage…I was thinking of dusting it off and giving it a shot. Any advice from the “Senior” Audiophiles? Thanks a million.

I agree with the salesman, but not for the reasons that most people appear to think. I presume that the salesman did not mean that the rear subwoofer out to be hooked up to the surround channels; this would be ridiculous. In a high-end home theater, there are tremendous advantages to having a second subwoofer placed NEAR the surrounds (rather than patched in with them). Here's why:

Bass is not non-directional. Many people believe that bass is "non-directional' or "omni-directional", and they consequently follow the "just put the subwoofer anywhere" approach. In a low-to-mid-level home theater setup, you may not notice the difference, but I submit that this is due to quality (or lack thereof) of the equipment. You describe yourself as a "freshman audiophile" so I'll assume that you're not planning on installing low-level equipment that would only minimally benefit from proper speaker placement and calibration.

The reason bass placement and balance can matter in a high-quality setup has to do with the physics of sound. Forgive me for getting nerdy, but I think it will help answer your question. Low frequency sound has a much longer wavelength than higher frequency sound. While a higher frequency (higher pitch) sound may have a wavelength on only a few milimeters, low frequency Bass sounds can have wavelengths up to 10 to 15 FEET. This means that the high frequency sound waves will have oscillated up and down several times before reaching the listener so the chances of catching the sound during a peak or a trough moment of the wave are pretty random based on position within the room. With a lower frequency wavelength of several feet, however, you're going to get certain points in the room where the sound wave at certain frequencies are always at a trough. This results in "lull spots" or "dead zones" within a room for bass effects. This is especially true when your room dimensions are less than perfect fo good accoustics.

The second subwoofer on the opposite end of the room comes in handy to help eliminate these dead zones. By splitting the low frequency signal over two subwoofers, you send out 2 waveforms toward the listeners. If a person happens to be sitting in an area with a lull for one sub, then the other sub should make up for it, since it's unlikely that both subs would end up having a lull at exactly the same spot. Some really high-end systems use FOUR subs (one in the middle of each wall) to make sure that there are no dead zones within the listening area.

So the bottom line is this: If you're planning on a good-quality system, plan on two subs. I'm in the middle of building my own dedicated theater room and I wouldn't do it any other way.

car stereo installation / speaker wiring?

I have an older Mazda Miata that only has 2 speakers ( 1 per door ). I purchased a radio from Best Buy as the previous one had been ripped out through the roof before I purchased this car. The radio I purchased was a cdx-GT310 ( sony ). It has 4 X 52 W output for speakers. The sales rep stated that the installation instructions would tell me how to convert that to 2 X something output, but they do not. I am no longer in Texas where I bought the radio and the nearest Best Buy is 3 hours away. Has any one ever heard of doing something like this?

Fred

Your sales rep was incorrect.

A very long time ago, a new head unit might have a rating like "4 x 7 W or 2 x 25 W". However, just about all modern decks aren't rated to put out more power into 2 channels than in 4 channels. The correct way to connect the head unit to a 2-speaker system is to just connect the front speaker outputs, and tape off the rear speaker wires. Leaving the rear speaker outputs disconnected won't harm the head unit. There's no alternate way to wire it for a higher power output into 2 channels. That would be true for just about any new head unit currently available.
